In England for 5 days and really wanted a traditional roast meal and weren’t in England on a Sunday. Stumbled across Russells on a day trip to York and ate the £10.95 carvery. It was amazing! Great value for money despite our conversion rate being so poor. The meat was good but the veggies and sauces were spot on. The stuffing was great and the cranberry sauce for the turkey was the best I’ve ever eaten hand down. The service was very professional and friendly. And to top it off we got to eat Yorkshire pudding in York! If your craving a roast lunch or dinner definitely give this place a go.

Disappointed they didn't have our first choices so we had the carvery, which turned out to be pretty good

More than satisfied with both the food and service, although some of the drinks were at the higher end of the prices we are more accustomed to

Went to Russell's today after not being in for many years , and it was just like putting on a comfy pair of old slippers .
Services was very polite and quick considering it was a busy lunch time .
Carvey was lovely roast turkey , beef , and ham , I had beef and was given to very large slices , my husband had the turkey .
All the usual veg , also broad beans which my husband was delighted with , also leeks in a white sauce , which was lovely .
Large Yorkshire and mash , roast potatoes .
We look forward to our next trip to York so we can visit again .

This place made us feel a lot better.
We had a very unfortunate dining experience at another restaurant in York the night before, so myself and my family (sister, Mum and Auntie) were apprehensive about where we were going to eat. However, we were pleasantly surprised when we came across Russell's.

We arrived on Saturday night and were seated immediately, to our surprise.
The lady who welcomed us (presumably the general manager) had a beautiful manner about her. She was extremely polite, cheery and so willing to help. The same goes for our young waiter. He was very attentive and really polite in his demeanour.

Naturally, as the establishment focused mainly on the great British roast, we all opted for a carvery. We had the choice of two meats, a giant Yorkshire pudding, vegetables and gravy. We were even allowed to go back for as many vegetables and gravy as we liked.
Each meat (turkey, gammon and beef) were all cooked really well: succulent and full of flavour. The choice of vegetables were many. The carrot & swede mix, broad beans and the leek bake were all particularly tasty.
There were loads of classic accompaniments to choose from (cranberry sauce, mustards, horseradish sauce etc).
Two of us went back for not only seconds for veg and gravy, but thirds (as we had enjoyed it that much). My auntie, who is quite a strict critic when it comes to food, ate pretty much every scrap.

We even found room for pudding. A couple of us opted for a raspberry trifle, which was really enjoyed. My sister's chocolate fudge cake was light and very tasty (a nice change from the overly rich chocolate cakes you seem to get).

If you're a lover of roast dinners, this place is a must if you're in York!
