The design of the restaurant is very lovely. Almost feels upmarket French bistro. The food was good and menu extensive but little things were irritating. Our party of 3 was cramped on a table for 2, one setting was missing and when the main course arrived it was only then that knives and forks were brought . Good but not perfect.

The ivy are rolling out there brand to several location in England so i gave this york recently opened a go .slightly pretentious, but i guess that’s the idea,no expense has been spared on the ambiance.service was spot on ,the training was evident food was very good well presented and all elements well executed .i am sure wherever they chose to open will be a great addition to the area .

I telephoned ahead to check that they did in fact cater for vegan requirements and was told that they do. Upon arrival, there was no items on the menu and the apologetic waiter said they could adapt two choices off the menu to make them vegan, a mediocre soup and a rather boring salad. In this day and age most restaurants offer imaginative vegan options. If you are vegan, I wouldn’t bother with the Ivy. My fellow non vegan diners were equally underwhelmed, for example, they serve frozen chips.

Our first impression of the Ivy was spoilt by the surly females at the front door, who made us feel that we were not welcome as a couple and indicated there were no available tables until much later in the evening and then indicated that we would only have a set period of time before groups came in. We joked that we would go and find another couple to join us and were told that this would indeed make a more suitable time available but would still have to leave early. This of course made us feel very unwelcome and I don't think The Ivy would be our first choice of restaurant in the future. We have one that has just opened in our home town of Cambridge, but probably won't be visiting this one simply for our experience in York. We booked online for a few days later and were once again greeted by the surly females at the front door. Having got past them, the staff inside the restaurant were attentive and helpful. The food was as you would expect, although everything was an extra for some meals which made for an expensive total dish. Possibly the experience could be improved by a simple smile to greet you as you walk into the main door and training the 'meet and greet' staff in people skills. The Starr Inn The City on the other hand was superb all round and would most certainly visit there again.

Lovely food and staff, my only gripe is that they state smart casual and people were there in t-shirts, it would be nice if people made the effort for such a nice place.
