A really first class experience. Whitby Fossil Hunting Trips are led by Byron Blessed of Natural Wonders,a dedicated palaeontologist, in Grape Lane Whitby. To take part in these trips it is recommended that you book in advance. Byron guided us through Whitby Old Town to the 199 steps leading up to Whitby Abbey and to St Mary's Church. At the top we then took the Cleveland Way footpath along the coast to Saltwick Bay. Byron was very attentive at all times throughout the walk. It is recommended that Walking Boots with ankle support are worn especially when negotiating the path from the cliff top down to Saltwick Bay. On the day we took part conditions underfoot on this pathway were treacherous and care had to be taken going down to the beach. Two of us did slip and ended up on our backs! Once on the beach Byron provided us with a great deal of information about fossils and were to look for them Several of our party found fossilised Ammonites. This is an activity for all ages provided you are fit and active. It is fairly strenuous. We returned along the beach to Whitby where the tour ended. An excellent time for everyone. Byron is to be congratulated on the tour. The total time was just over three hours. Our grandson, aged 11, was very interested and has since said he had a fantastic day. Highly recommended. Thank you Byron.

4 of us (2 adults and 2 children) joined a small group who went on this trip on a Friday morning. We had seen it advertised on a poster in the shop earlier in the week. Byron, the shop owner who led the trip, was very knowledgable and led us up the abbey steps along the top of the cliff edge and down to the small bay along the cost. He gave us a very informative talk on how to safely search for fossils and what to look out for. We then started our hunt. We all thoroughly enjoyed searching the beach and pebbles and found quite a few good specimens. We walked along the shoreline seeing dinosaur footprints and a fossil graveyard. The scenery was amazing and we had a brilliant time. We would definitely go again the next time we are in Whitby.

I stumbled across this activity when I wandered into the quite wonderful Natural Wonders store on Grape Lane, and found out there was a space with a group going out the next morning. The group of adults and children walked out to the beach with our most helpful and knowledgeable guide and spent a lovely morning learning about the geology and fossils, what to look for and what we were seeing. It was an altogether memorable walk on the beach and I have the ammonites I found to remember it by. Highly recommended.
