Description: Established by Thomas Rule in 1798, Rules is a Covent Garden institution and the oldest restaurant in London. Tuxedoed waiters glide around the formal interior, decorated with antique sketches, where plush banquettes offer a discreet retreat from the main dining room. The whole-hearted menu of traditional British food specialises in classic game cookery, oysters, pies and puddings, featuring game birds, roe deer and Belted Galloway beef fresh from the establishment's own High Pennines estate. The wine list is a French-led affair, or there are native draught beers served in silver tankards.

We walked in on Saturday night after a booking elsewhere for our wedding anniversary did not happen.
We didn't think we would be successful but Rules found us a table and our evening was far better that we could ever have imagined. It's been many years since we've been there and delighted to find the old world charm and exquisite quality remain. The Rules Royale is divine. Thank you for saving our special night.

Was not disappointed. Absolutely lovely food, wine, and service. Faultless. And you can’t say that about many places these days. Please don’t ever change! The beef rib was amazing, and the sticky toffee pudding with the custard was to die for! Hopefully see you again soon! Thank you

Booked lunch here and came with a first timer! Lucky to have got in as from tomorrow it’s closed, yet again, due to covid restrictions. The restaurant was beautifully decorated for Christmas as always and the food was excellent. Not to mention a cocktail or two in the bar! My first timer friend was impressed and would go again. Fingers crossed everything will back to normal really soon!

Waited in a sort queue of three couples to gain entry, the doorman was a nice chap and seemed glad to be back too. Gel hand dispenser next followed by a temperature check. Coats off and upstairs to the cocktail bar where Sam and David were busy but working together as well as having a chat with us over cocktails.

It was full downstairs but upstairs we had a choice of tables, not empty but not couples spaced apart. Our waiter whose name I forget was very professional, explained the specials did a good job of carefully opening and pouring an older wine. I’d opened an old bottle at home recently and destroyed the cork which meant straining that particular wine (it was still great though)!

I went with a rabbit special starter on puff pastry followed by a partridge with game chips. It’s nice to have food not seen on many menus and of course they also have their own game supply from Bonny Scotland.

A lovely visit, like taking a trip back in time to a bygone era. People tend to say things like I’m off out tonight for an Italian or maybe a Indian. This would be ‘I’m out for a proper slice of old England’

Well done team Rules
