I heard a lot about Cafe-in-the-Crypt from my friends, who always enjoyed its freshly cooked food and efficient service, so my partner and I had dinner here last Saturday. Unfortunately, the night was close to a disaster. I think the main reason is that they were totally understaffed on one of the busiest days (and yes, on Saturday), and this is beyond comprehension. It’s a school holiday, which means a lot of families would want to visit, so why not to make sure there is enough staff to serve? Clearly, the management here doesn’t think this way, hence the staff, while doing their best, couldn’t cope with a huge load of people.

We were nicely served with salads by the lady working at the first counter, who was very professional, hardworking and polite with customers while being extremely busy and left completely alone to serve salads, cakes and beverages for really, REALLY, a lot of people, and, again, there was absolutely no one to help her, when she definitely needed someone.

Then, we wanted to get soups and coffees, so stayed in a very long queue for hot food and drinks. I am sorry to say but the waiting time was just ridiculous, we were about to leave our trays on the counter and walk out but were starved so tried to be extremely patient. Then, it took another great deal of time to pay, not to mention that our soups got completely cold by then but, honestly, we’ve run out of energy to go back to the counter and change it. We wanted to speak to the manager but finding him in such a mess seemed like an impossible task. Frankly, I don’t even think that he was present on the floor, otherwise, how could it have happened?

It’s such a shame that our dinner wasn’t as enjoyable as it could be in one of the most atmospheric places in the heart of London. I might give it another chance, only because salads were good and some members of staff really tried to go out of their way to save the day, so won’t give it a very low rating this time. But the management needs to pull up its socks.

popped in out of the rain for coffee and cake. Whilst the food looks lovely, and was tasty, service (self service) is a bit disorganised, I had to attract attention to get cakes, and then had to queue in a dysfunctional queue to try to get coffees, someone needs to take control and organise the staff. Paying was equally stressful, and then there was no cutlery, they had run out.....

Coffee was weak, cakes were good. So just needs a sort out organisationally.

In a city where everything is very expensive, the Café in the Crypt of St Martin in the Fields is a pleasant exception. The Café - located in the crypt of a currently operating anglican church - is actually good value for the money you spend. Just to make an example, a cup of tea is 1,95 GBP, which is far less expensive than any other central locations. In the Crypt you can have breakfast, lunch, dinner or you can simply stop by for a tea or a coffee. And you will leave with the feeling that you have not only fed yourselves, but you have also helped the needy ones. Actually, the money raised in the Café are destined to charity activities.

The church with its fabulous architecture and perfect acoustics bring me memories of the times I had the chance to listen to gorgeous concerts and even their service, just so I could listen to the choir. Do not miss the crypt with its unique cafe, yummy food which makes you feel like you went back in time.

Lovely food for the price. But the menu was wrong and the kids food not available (despite being advertised as weekends and school holidays). Suggestions for alternatives, begrudgingly provided.

Very nice setting.
