We visited both the East and West cemeteries which included a guided tour around the West cemetery. Both the cemeteries were fascinating and well worth a visit, the guidebook was very interesting too. Unique place.

All the volunteers were very friendly, engaging and knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend a visit.

First time to Highgate Cemetery and it is well worth a visit. Our guide was John Waite who was very knowledgeable and provided a wealth of facts and anecdotes not only about specific graves such as Karl Marx but also about the history and design of the site. I'd strongly recommend taking a guided tour.

I'd also strongly recommend getting a bus up Highgate Hill; it is quite a climb.

I'm a Londoner but had never visited before and can't believe I left it so long. Many of the best known graves are in the east site but the west is where the main architectural action is to be found. I took a guided tour and was lucky enough to have John Waite, the cemetery's senior guide and a brilliant storyteller. He told us so much about the history of the cemetery and fascinating stories about its most illustrious residents, but he also had background on many of the lesser known graves. I can't recommend a trip to the cemetery highly enough, and would strongly advise a tour with John if he's around.

A great tour of the cemetery with a very knowledgeable guide. We visited most of the graves within the 90min tour and then we were allowed to wander around again, on our own, to visit one or two more graves and to take more photos. The tour also allowed access to the East Cemetery, where we visited the Karl Marx grave. A very atmospheric cemetery and some great photo opportunities. Highgate Cemetery is a very moving and peaceful place to spend a couple of hours. For those concerned about loos, there are some on site and some in Lauderdale House, in Waterlow park, where you can also treat yourself to tea and cake. To reach the cemetery we arrived by tube at Archway and caught a 271 bus up Highgate Hill, which stops outside Lauderdale House. This has been on our list of places to visit for quite a while and we will definitely be returning.
