the chef was responsive to my request for low calorie options and even added egg and sweet potatoe to the breakfast menu for my benefit. On one evening i chose from the excellent vegan menu and had a wonderful courgette and avocado starter and stuffed red peppers main; on another evening i had a tasty carrot and corriander soup and a delicioius sea bream in lemon sauce with a side dish of delicately cooked carrots, courgettes and mange touts. satisfying and nutritious meals that did pile on the pounds!

Starting a business is never easy, starting a business, refurbishment and landscaping is a big ask, but this was our second visit since November 2017, and the team are working well, they understand the importance of customer service, they genuinely know how to welcome and ensure that you enjoy a pleasant relaxed dining experience, the enthusiasm from the staff is both genuine and palpable, our party enjoyed a wide selection from the menu, it was all delicious and to a high standard, we will certainly return.

We stumbled upon this place when out walking and stopped for tea. Decided to return for dinner, as the chef specialises in Vegetarian Cuisine. The charming, youthful Italian Manager offered to pick us up from the centre of Grasmere, to save us driving back to dine.

This was most kind, but it meant him neglecting a skeleton staff. When we entered the dining room there was a palpable air of disquiet... most of the 12 or so diners were waiting for either a menu, or drinks, or food, or simply to die of despair. Some vocalised that they had been waiting over an hour. It didn't bode well...

In this situation, when trapped in a rural location with no means of escape, I find it best to sit it out with a decent bottle of wine. We'd pretty much reached the bottom of the bottle before the starter came.

The food itself was very good. Just irrationally slow in coming. One chef seemed to be running the kitchen, with no help. (He appeared from time to time to apologise for the delays.) With typical British patience, a collective sigh echoed around the panelled dining room.

The building itself (which has a fascinating history) is being done up by a professional landscaper, apparently. He has an excellent eye for the interior styling, but no eye for picking efficient organisers. A charming staff does not mask the inability to deliver what's expected. I would like to come back and stay, but simply wouldn't dare to risk the rise in blood pressure.

We saw a restaurant sign on the way to our walk and decided to follow it for a drink and lunch. It turned out to be quite a find. A country house hotel and restaurant at the foot of the mountain, in the forrest overlooking the valley. lunch was served that day in the charming little ‘Poet’s bar’. We had the Sunday roast and it was the best roast-beef I’ve had in the UK. Cooked trough British style but so moist and tender it was absolutely delicious. Stylish, eye for detail, timeless decor and great selection of wines. Great and friendly service. We liked it all so much we booked it for Christmas. Perfect starting point for many enchanting walks.

Lovely little cafe out of the way from touristy spots.

Great menu to cater for all tastes and appetites.

Friendly Italian chef looked after us well and catered for dietary requirements without a problem!

Nicely decorated inside - although could do with turning up the heating as was pretty chilly.

Would definitely return!
