Owner description: Lake Windermere ends around one mile short of Ambleside at Waterhead, and can come as a shock to boat passengers expecting to be in the town. But don't worry! There is an Electric Bus that take you into the centre of Ambleside. It is well worth the trip. The bus stops next to the world famous; Ambleside Sheepskins. If you decide to pop in to Ambleside Sheepskins, you might be lucky and bump into the odd celebrity or two shopping. Anything Sheepskin can be found in there 2 high street shops, boasting the best selection of sheepskin slippers, sheepskin rugs, cowhide rugs, reindeer skins in the UK. As well as the Local Herdwick Sheepskin rugs. They also offer to post your goods if you can not carry them back home with you. If you walk a further 300 yards up the road you will come across the best deli in the village, Stockghyll Fine Foods, takeaway pies, sandwiches & sweets - highly recommended! For walking and outdoor gear visit Cunninghams around the corner. Cunningham's was established in 1971 by Stewart Cunningham, an Ambleside lad who spent his early years on the fells in the Lake District. He opened the Ambleside store to meet the needs of the many walkers drawn to the Lakes. He has watched the technology evolve over the years from Ventile jackets and canvas rucksacks to the advent of Gore-tex and other fabric technologies. Cunningham's now has six stores across England, Scotland and Wales.

Hired a motorsport for two hours and got great views of the lake from Ambleside all the way down to Bowness. Not that much more than cruise for a family, but much more exciting. Find the view you like then kill the motor and enjoy your picnic in complete piece. You can't get these views any other way.

With a good hotel as a base Waterhead has enough bars, restaurants and snack shops for a short stay. With superb views of Lake Windermere and boat trips only yards away I could happily stay here and go no further. However frequent buses give access to all other parts of the Lake District.

came here from Bowness on the wlc cruise boat. It has nice walks to gently stroll arond and many hotels to visit and cafes. There is a large yha overlooking the lake and various boats to hire. There is also a large car park and a park to walk arond next to the lake with amazing views of the lake and surrounding lakeland mountains.

A good place to admire Lake Windermere, catch a lake steamer, do a little shopping or just eat. Too cold for people watching at the moment.

Waterhead is a nice little village to wander through on the lake edge, but there isn't a huge amount to see or do here. Probably the best thing about the place is the YHA, and it's a good spot on the lake to take sunset photos from.
