As we were not allowed to go to a warmer country for Christmas we decided to head for The Lakes and chose The Waterhead 3 day Christmas break. The hotel is in a great location, only a 15 or 20 minute stroll into Ambleside and right by the steamer pier. On arrival we were offered a mug of mulled wine and a mince pie and with afternoon tea we had 3 different champagnes to taste. Christmas Eve dinner started with a complimentary gin and tonic and Christmas Day breakfast started with a bucks fizz. Our room had a lake view on two sides and was warm, comfortable and well equipped, even down to underfloor heating in the bathroom. The wifi is reliable and free. Private parking is under the hotel or at the front. There is no lift and the stairs are pretty steep. All of the staff were excellent and made it clear that nothing was too much trouble; our special thanks go to Alex the Food and Beverage Manager. Our only slight disappointment was the food which, to us, was not up to the very high standard of the hotel and staff. The hotel felt very Covid safe and well organised; to provide safe spacing they had reduced the number of guests by nearly 50% from 'normal' years. Because of the foul weather on Boxing Day we took our complimentary Steamer cruise on the Sunday morning.
Thank you to all at The Waterhead; we enjoyed our Christmas with you and we wish you all a very Happy New Year.

Room tip: We had room 23 on the first floor, excellent.

This was our first stay at the Waterhead. We found it by chance. Our two previous accommodation bookings were cancelled leading up to our stay in Ambleside. It was a special birthday treat for a special birthday (my 65th). We were so pleased to have found this hotel. A very warm welcome upon arrival. We received a room upgrade. Our room was spacious, well appointed and very clean. Dinner on the first evening was excellent. A good menu choice, great food (and wine) and brilliant service. Breakfast was really good too. Sat in a window location looking across the lake. Blissful. My wife and I will be back I am sure.

The hotel was very clean and pleasant looking, the room was a decent size and the view of the lake was lovely. The hotels breakfast options were varied and delicious as was the dinner in the restaurant.
The staff were welcoming and friendly.

Spacious rooms, friendly approachable staff. Our second stay here, it just gets better. Staff are excellent, especially with the spectre of another lockdown hanging over them. Nothing is a problem, even us requesting ice cream at breakfast to get tablets into a dog. The hotel is extremely dog friendly with both dogs having their own bed and complimentary biscuits laid out for their arrival. Bowls are also provided. Very thoughtful and appreciated by both us and them :) Ideally placed for a stroll into Ambleside, yet far enough away from the crowds.

We stay at Waterhead every year with our family. Last year we were disappointed but came again this year to see if things had improved. The room was lovely and clean, with lots of little extras.
The breakfast is always a delight, even if somewhat different to the usual delicacies, given COVID situation.
What most impressed us though was the staff. The receptionist, Sophia, always helpful. The breakfast staff are always polite and courteous, nothing too much trouble.
The only negative is that the food at dinner was underwhelming, lack lustre on flavours and choice. Also, the lady in charge was very strict as our child wanted to go talk to their Grandma, who was sat on an adjacent table, and told us we would have to leave the hotel if they did this again! My 6 year old child, who is shy, was mortified and thought she had done something wrong when she had only spoken to her Grandma. I know there are rules but we cannot teach our children that this is wrong, it is damaging.

Dear chelrisla
Thank you for your review and I was pleased to read that, overall, your stay was enjoyable.
Sadly, and in light of current restrictions and operational constraints, we have streamlined our evening menu somewhat and I am sorry that this did not meet your expectations.
Obviously, and in line with our legal obligations, we need to be mindful of mixing between households and groups and, having discussed this with the member of the team you mention, I am sorry that you felt disappointed with our requests.
Sadly, whilst this may or may not be damaging and difficult to impress upon children, we clearly have the safety of other diners to consider, along with assuring all our guests that we provide a legally compliant and safe environment.
We do hope to welcome you back in the future when, hopefully, things will be back to normal and we are better able to meet your expectations.
Best regards
Matt Stanaway
