This has always been a feature of Hull and a great landmark. It is amazing for it to remain in such good condition and “us locals” tend to take it for granted; we should not as it is a great feature of our city.

From a structural and artistic point of view this statue is, in truth, rather unremarkable. I give it four stars however to reflect its beautiful colour (no pun intended) and its splendid condition in view of its age.

Well maintained statue to commemorate William of Orange. Depending upon your political or religious views - the most favourable views are that it was to commemorate the preservation of Protestantism in the face of Catholicism. and cement the power of parliament over the whims of the sovereign. (History is complex - so many different views!)
This statue comes with untrue local legends:
1 When the local clocks chime midnight (or 13), King Billy gets off his horse and goes for a pint in the adjacent King William pub. This is even more difficult since the pub has been shut for a few years LOL
2 The Sculptor realised that he had omitted stirrups from the statue and committed suicide. (The statue depicts Billy as a classical style Roman emperor who did not wear stirrups. The sculptor Scheemaker actually lived for 50 years afterwards)
3 During rag week, students regularly brasso the horses 'undercarriage' as a joke - leading the council to have to polish the entire statue so that the twiddly bits do not stand out. Oh really ??!!

GREAT SADNESS
The most amazing part of this site are the Grade 2 listed toilets underneath the monument. Sadly, in these times of austerity, they are CLOSED. My childhood memories are of a miniature cathedral of slate and vitrified brickwork, complete with glass cisterns to the urinals.
I do hope that Hull council can see their way to opening them on certain days in the year. Where such architectural curiosities and wonders survive, they do deserve to be seen!

By the way, this statue apparently came second in a sculptural competition. The winner is near me in Bristol city centre - but I prefer this one!

King William III was known as "King Billy". This impressive gold statue is located behind the Art Nouveau toilets (that are closed) in Market Place. It is also right next to the Holy Trinity Church.

The statue has been around since 1734. It is amazing that it is still in tact after all the damage Hull suffered in WW II.
