If you visit restaurants that appear in that famous tyre guide it can be hit and miss especially on a mid week lunchtime. You know the sort of thing ,named chef away for the day leaving the stoves to the kitchen porter or a choice limited to a couple of easy to please dishes.
Not here.
This was an outstanding demonstration of culinary talent. Top rate sourcing, diligent and creative prep and wonderful execution. Plenty of choice and attractively priced for the lunchtime customer. A rabbit starter was sublime and a Venison main course of similar quality.
Service was attentive and friendly(and not at all stuffy or pompous as can be the case in this style of restaurant).
Interesting wine list and a cracking house champagne.
Excellence from start to finish.

This was the second time eating at the Champignon. First time was for my birthday some years ago and I didn't like the super formal serif and felt one of my dishes wasn't seasoned accurately. My second visit was too long In the waiting and anything felt negatively the first time was emphatically removed thanks to this occasion. My friend and I dined at lunch time and enjoyed every mouthful of our food. The half bottles of fine wine which were available makes the wine list very accessible which I like a lot. Car men's service was brilliant and Helen hosting and popping in and out of our table with the wine was lovely. Can't wait to come back for dinner. VERY impressed.

We have been to this restaurant 4 or 5 times before, over the past 15 or so years. The food has always been prepared by the chef, David Everitt-Matthias, personally, so you know you are guaranteed his high standards. His wife runs the 'front of house' and it is always a pleasure to see her friendly face as you come through the door. The food is always beautifully presented, with rich tastes and sauces. He does traditional 'chefy' food, not the creative style (so no bacon & egg ice cream). For a Michelin 2-star restaurant, it is also very good value.

Slightly odd ambiance to the restaurant itself, but absolutely delicious food; beautifully created and presented, with unusual combinations. Our only gripe was that the fabulous display of cheeses became a meagre offering once it reached the table and would have benefitted from some quince jelly or similar.

I had the pleasure to be taken here for my birthday dinner and the food and service was just fabulous.
It is not just that the food tastes fantastic but it looks too good to eat (but that did not stop us!).
Second time I have been and would go and again and again.
The people who say no ambience or cool service must prefer the American 'have a nice day' style as I find the service is friendly and extremely knowledgeable but not all stuffy and does not intrude - just right. There was a lovely buzz of conversation and a feel of everyone enjoying great food. What more could one want.
The cheese board is heaven as is the bacon and onion brioche and the canapés tantalising even before one starts on the actual courses.
