We stayed in the Luxury Suite at Ascot House Hotel for 3 nights towards the end of March and it was excellent, spacious, comfortable, well-furnished and with plenty of storage space. Breakfast was delicious and we particularly appreciated the plate of fresh fruit we started with each morning. Bernard and Terri were the perfect hosts. Bernard even provided transport to and from the station. All in all a very relaxing, enjoyable stay in a first rate small hotel. Not even the weather could dampen our enthusiasm.

There’s a reason that the Ascot House Hotel is one of the top ranked (if not the best) hotels in Torquay, and that’s comfort, ambience, hospitality and a great breakfast. Wait – that’s four reasons. We visited in the middle of the one and only snowstorm to hit the South-West of England in years, and still had a wonderful time.

We were warmly greeted by the hosts Terri and Bernard, who helped us lug our suitcases to the Seaview Suite on the top floor. We received a quick introduction to the hotel facilities and the local town, and then settled in to watch the snow fall. The Suite consists of three rooms, a bedroom with a queen size bed, a sitting/main room with chairs/sofa/small bed and quite spectacular view of the bay. Lastly a well-appointed bathroom with a combo bath/shower. We also got to peek at a couple of the other suites and they all seemed extremely nice – including one with an old iron claw bath.

Breakfast is available from 8-10am and features a nice plate of fresh fruit, the usual tea/coffee toast and an a la carte cooked menu. I ordered the full British Breakfast and wasn’t disappointed. We found our hosts to be very friendly and welcoming, and always willing to help out with “to-do” suggestions and ideas for sightseeing.

A few things you should know:

1. Parking, as many reviewers mention is indeed tight. That’s just the way these houses are. There is enough space for 3-4 cars as long as you are willing and able to maneuver around and reverse at will. There is also a parking lot less than 100 yards down the road for the less adventurous.

2. It’s an old house. There will be a few creaks and strange noises. Even with 30 mph winds we barely heard anything outside our room.

3. Be prepared to hunt down power outlets. You will find extension cords strategically located under beds and next to furniture items.

4. You’re less than a 10 minute walk down to the seafront (so it’s uphill on the way back!) Some great restaurants to be found down there. Also a local pub (Bull and Bush) just down the road and a SPAR (small grocery store) 5 minutes the other way.

5. Plenty of taxis, no Uber.

6. Terri & Bernard will happily co-ordinate your arrival/departure time via email (and many other things too). Make the most of it!

You’ll have a fabulous time. Even in the heart of a massive snowstorm, my wife and I enjoyed every minute and will certainly return at some point in the coming years.

Wow, thank you very much indeed, John! It's always so helpful for us to get specific details about what guests have liked about their stay with us - and even more helpful to be told of any niggles. More importantly, we know that such detail is immensely helpful for fellow travellers, so thanks so much for all the informative tips for others! (Regarding the power outlets, we have, indeed, tried to make them as accessible as possible for the modern world of multiple gadgets!)

We couldn't be more pleased that you so enjoyed you stay, John, and we do very much hope to see you again on your next trip to the area!

We had the most wonderful stay in the spacious and well presented Gothic Suite. We had a very comfortable bed, personal lounge and access to the front balcony.
Terri and Bernard were very welcoming and accommodating, and were excellent hosts.
Breakfast was freshly cooked, with a good selection of continental items too.
Looking forward to staying again!

Terri & Bernard are excellent hosts. We stayed in the luxury suite which has French doors onto the balcony from both the lounge & the bedroom. There is a small fridge in the lounge with fresh milk & filtered water. The massive bathroom with roll top bath and separate shower doubles as a dressing room. We were lucky to be able to have a peek at the other suites too and would not have been disappointed with any of them. The accommodation is a short stroll away from shops & the seafront. The breakfast was was delicious and beautifully presented. Terri & Bernard had the perfect balance of being attentive without being intrusive. I can’t wait to return to Ascot House. Thank you.

Room Tip: The luxury & gothic suites have the fewest steps to them. Other suites are on higher levels
