Although the meeting rooms, library and lecture room have remained actively used throughout, the 332 seat theatre has been quietish for half a dozen years as a result of financial problems brought about partly through it having mostly amateur low budget productions. However as a result of positive discussions with Plymouth's Barbican Theatre and others as well as the use of reserve funds and in kind support as well as specialist advice on technical upgrades, the Theatre will come back to life at Easter in April 2017 with the Exeter Northcott Theatre and Le Navet Bete's production of a new show Dracula: The Bloody Truth. The Athenaeum is well over twice the size of the Barbican Theatre and also has a balcony and orchestra pit.

Not that well known but well used. On the southern rim of Derry's Cross and next to the Reel Cinema. 350 seat theatre built I think in the early 1960s and well used but many local theatre companies and groups as well as Plymouth Comedy Club. There most recent night earlier this week was a surprising good mix of stand up and more and we look forward to the next, I think in December. The theatre is a facility open to the general public by the members of the Athenaeum which is centuries old organisation catering for cultural literary and many other interests. As non members we have been to many busy and entertaining events in the theatre. There are web links to all the stage events and it's easy to find plenty of separate details of the daytime events. It's friendly hospitable and welcoming. The building is beginning to look a bit dated but the theatre is comfortable and well equipped.
