I love The Tea Room, which many don't seem to know about as it's housed upstairs within the Design Quarter Crabtree & Evelyn shop.
It's quiet, quirky (with loads of mismatched furniture and crockery, and packed with interesting books and pictures) and serves the only scones I've ever really enjoyed.
My experience of scones before discovering The Tea Room was limited mainly to the small, hard objects manufactured in my gran's kitchen that were better suited to a career as a hockey puck than as baked goods. Bless my gran - she could bake everything else brilliantly, but her scones were the definite exception. Thankfully, The Tea Room's offerings are the complete opposite.
Light, soft and huge, the scones arrive complete with proper clotted cream (none of that nasty out-the-can fake whipped cream nonsense), salted butter and a Crabtree & Evelyn preserve. Served with a cup of whichever Crabtree & Evelyn tea one prefers (or a coffee - I always pick a cappuccino), they are a treat that my husband and I return for again and again.
The Tea Room does serve other things, of course, although the menu is rather limited. There are a few breakfast options, various cakes, light meals and whatever specials of the day are on offer, plus various Crabtree & Evelyn cordials and a high tea option. We rarely bother with any of these as nothing beats the scones (except maybe the eggnog, served around Christmastime).
The service is provided by a single waiter, who is pleasant enough, although not particularly hurried. This is a spot that I pick when I want peace and quiet and not to be bothered. Unless one has the misfortune of arriving to find a squeal-fest of a baby shower or kitchen tea, one can sit for an hour or two undisturbed. Great spot for catching up with a friend, reading a book or recovering from a trek through all the Design Quarter decor shops on a busy weekend.
