Sapibenega Experience Do Not Stay Here

Review of Sapibenega
1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Feb 13, 2017via mobile
My husband and I were booked to stay at Yandup Lodge for two nights but were told by Gamboa Tours upon arrival that there were structural issues at the lodge and we had been moved to Sapibenega Lodge. This seemed very strange as everyone else aboard our plane was headed to Yandup. We found out later that Yandup was overbooked and so we became overflow.

In the distance we could see another island with some very weathered structures. Everyone referred to this as the deserted island. In disbelief we found ourselves taken to this island.

We had left our hotel in Panama City before 5:00 am and arrived at this deserted island around 8:00 am. We were shocked to find the two of us isolated on this very small island.

There were a couple people on the island but no one could communicate with us and no one tried to either.

We were shown to a very rustic and weathered hut. There was a bed made up and two towels. That's it. There was no water for washing etc. There was a toilet and sink but neither worked.

We were told we would be served breakfast upon arrival by the tour company and we were to bring water bottles as water would be supplied to fill our bottles. There was no drinking water on the island.

Thankfully there was cell service and I was able to text a friend back in Panama City who called Gamboa Tours. We were in an unsafe and unsanitary situation.

Finally someone who spoke a bit of English came from the village to the island. Around 11:30 am we were given a bottle of water and a light breakfast. When we asked for a second bottle of water we were told there wasn't any.

We were served lunch and dinner but they weren't the seafood meals that we were told we would be getting. They were basic rice, chicken strips and fish. Four more bottles of water did arrive around 4:00 pm. For supper we were offered a bottle of wine and when I asked what the cost would be I was told no bill, only to find out next morning they were billing us $30.00 for it.

We never did get water into our hut. They brought a garbage can with about 8 inches/20 cm of water. My husband rigged something up so that the toilet worked.

After expressing a lot of frustration etc with the tour company we were flown out the next day at our own expense. We were expecting a San Blas rustic experience but that's not what we received.

This is definitely a deserted island that is unsafe and unsanitary.
This was an expensive and upsetting experience that we did not sign up for. It doesn't score a 1.
