The Yale Saloon was a block from our hotel so we thought we would try it. She ordered a half rack and I a full rack. They were excellent but we had enough let over for another meal. Cowboy beans and yam fries make good sides.

Decided on here because it sounded like a fun. It was. Great atmosphere although one of pet hates is country music so I had a hard time blanking that out.
Staff were brilliant. Knowledgable, funny and very efficient. The price point for a place like this was spot on. Good selection of drinks and a comprehensive BBQ and Smoker menu. The food itself was good but the chicken portion I had was tiny. I sampled the ribs which were really good.
Good entertainment with a rodeo bull and line dancing lessons, if you're into that.

We walked in for a beer after dinner on a Tuesday, looking for live music, and discovered a duo playing rock-blues. It was good to sit and listen, and watch couples dancing most proficiently. The beer was fine, and they had Knob Creek bourbon, so it was a pleasant place to spend a bit of time in a really relaxed atmosphere. We did not order food, so can't comment, but most of the crowd seemed to be enjoying their food experience. There was a reasonably full house and friendly bar and wait staff. The Yale is apparently a Vancouver institution, so we were glad we stopped in.

The restaurant is largely a pub but they do take reservations and I would suggest them during the weekends. The waitstaff are extremely friendly and attentive which was a strong point. The menu is largely BBQ and the menu is fairly small both in terms of food and drink.

The food was largely OK and passable with a major criticism is the lack of flavour that I would associate with southern BBQ. The ribs were too dry, either they had overcooked it when there was marinade or if they were dry ribs then not enough rubbing spices were used. The grilled cheese had a lot of cheese in it but it lacked the flavour to it. It would be a bit like using Brie instead of cheddar for instance.

Largely, since it wasn't particularly expensive that sort of helped in mitigating the negativity with the food. The atmosphere, though, is very good and gives the impression you're in the Deep South with line dancing and country music. If you're in on the weekend night, your conversation will be shouting match due to the music. An OK experience overall.

We came on a Monday night from out of town. Cheryl was our waitress and gave us great recommendations from the menu. She was very friendly and personable (and had wonderful braids). Andrew made our night even better by letting us ride the bull. We did some dancing lessons and had a great time in a friendly atmosphere. Would definitely go back and would recommend to others.
