DO: Ignore all the touts in town who want to sell you an overpriced visit there.

DO: Ignore all the "guides" who barely know more than you do if you've read a few things about Monte Alban and understand the context.

DO: Go as early as possible. It gets ferociously hot up there many days of the year. If you take a taxi and arrive prior to 8am the roadway gates 1.6km from the site will be locked. If you arrive at the gate at say 7am and walk uphill you will arrive around 7:30 and have the entire site to yourself for 20 minutes!! And if you've got a good driver you'll arrive just after 8 and literally have the entire site to yourself for about 15 minutes. That's amazing!

DO: Consider walking back to Oaxaca Zocalo from the site if it's not too hot and still early enough in the day. If you're a power walker it's about 75 minute walk back. This assumes you have good shoes and Google maps to show you the path through two villages en route.

DO: Visit the museum *after* you've walked around the site.

DO NOT: Wander around the site past 7:50am if you arrived prior to opening; go back to the ticket booth and buy your ticket at 8. Don't risk getting in trouble for not having a ticket.

DO NOT: Worry if you don't have return transport. Enough taxis bring passengers one-way and there are regular buses that will bring you back to Oaxaca Centro.

Monte Alban is definitely a place to visit ! It’s beautiful, there are good explanations if you don’t want to get a guide and it’s not too touristic. It’s easy to get there and back with (cheap) public transport. I can definitely recommend this place!

What a pleasant surprise! I visited as part of a tour and was really glad we decided to go. The ruins are quite spectacular and having a guide to explain things really helps give you a better appreciation for it. The only downside was we were rushed and only had 45 mins to explore on our own which is not enough time & we were unable to visit the museum. I would recommend at least 2 hour visit.

Went to Monte Alban this morning and recommend it highly. We didn’t want to spend all day on a tour so booked a shuttle bus seat (#1 Antonio de Leon) for 70MXN each. Bit of confusion but the bus turned up and we got through town and up the windy mountain road in about 30mins.
You then pay your own entry ticket (70MXN) and wander through at leisure. There are guides available for hire but the info boards are in English so we didn’t want/need one.
This a truly awesome place in the real meaning of the word- fascinating. But also to be up so high, see the vistas and breath the air feels great. After 1.75hrs we returned to the cafe and sat on the magnificent terrace enjoying the spectacular views over the valley before returning to the meeting place for the shuttle back to town.
This is where the only negative came in. The driver didn’t return us to the Zócalo where he should have but stopped at a hotel on the outskirts. We had no idea where we were but found our way back because my partner speaks Spanish and could ask for directions. Not a nice end to such a wonderful morning.
