We loved our stay at Mafolie. The restaurant was closed during our stay, so we can't comment on the dinners there, but the hotel itself was wonderful, and the restaurant was open for breakfast every day, and the breakfast was phenomenal. The omelets and pancakes were great; the French toast was delicious, and I highly recommend trying the "Josh" potatoes. Our waitress every morning was so kind and smiley - seeing her for breakfast every morning was one of the highlights of our trip to St. Thomas. The hotel itself had lots of character. It was definitely not a cookie-cutter, chain hotel, but had more of a boutique hotel vibe. The views from pretty much anywhere on the hotel grounds were stunning and overlooked the old town district of Charlotte Amalie, the main harbor, and Water Island. We had let the hotel staff know we were there for our 15th wedding anniversary, and when we arrived we found a hand-written card from the manager, balloons, and a bucket of champagne on ice. We didn't notice a ton of bugs in September, but mosquitos would come into the room at night if we left the balcony doors open, so we really wished there were some type of screen or netting on the balcony door, but it was still so nice to crack open the balcony doors every morning and lie in bed watching the harbor come to life and listening to the sea plane take off on it's morning run to St. Croix. We stayed in room 108, and loved that it had it's own little gated entrance, along with a private balcony. Our only complaints were that the bathroom needed some updating (mismatched fixtures, a broken floor drain in the shower, water damage on the vanity), and the king-size bamboo bed was absolutely beautiful and fit the tropical aesthetic perfectly - but it was also really squeaky anytime you moved or rolled over during the night. Also, the Wi-Fi in the room was great, but the light was really bright at night, and we hung towels from the bed frame to block the light while sleeping. Overall, though, it was a really great hotel with very friendly staff, incredible views, unique atmosphere, and a location that was really right in the center of the island, within about 15 minutes of almost everything we wanted to do. We loved that the hotel was located high up on the mountain. In the jeep we rented, one of our favorite things to do was to take the roof off and drive around the higher areas of the island, overlooking the ocean views around sunset and listening to the sounds of birds and insects all around us - something we're sure we would have missed out on if we'd have stayed at one of the bustling, seaside chain resorts. We'd definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a quieter, friendly, out-of-the way, hotel with friendly staff and more of an authentic vibe.
