This restaurant had been recommended to us, so after a walk down one side of Ashford and back up the other to check out the options, we ended up in Ropa Vieja.
It was a busy Saturday night outside on the terrace, but inside the plain and sparsely decorated restaurant was empty and just as devoid of atmosphere.
We waited at the bar for a table outside, had a couple of cocktails and a couple of cold beers, which provided a challenge in itself, as apparently they had just had a delivery and initially it was stated that none of their bottled beer (no draught) was cold??
The day was saved when a few Corona's were found which were cold and after we were seated to eat, the subsequent beers arrived suitably chilled
Contrary to the atmosphere inside, the deck was busy and buzzing and a nice place to spend the evening eating and people watching.
The food however was something of a disappointment - having been highly recommended as an authentic Puerto Rican/Cuban venue, the girls found their "Camarones en Salsa Criolla Shrimp in Puerto Rican Creole Sauce" to be excellent in terms of the quality and size of shrimp, but disappointingly bland in flavour. There really was no expected spice to the sauce and very little flavour.
The "Costillas “St. Louis” con Salsa BBQ Jack Daniels (1 Lb.) St. Louis Ribs w/ Jack Daniels BBQ Sauce", were not so much of a disappointment, but again they were far from memorable.
Once we were seated at the table the service was excellent and with the atmosphere on the deck it was not a bad evening, but the bland shrimp, the inside space and the initial issue with cold beer I could only describe the visit as ok!
