TOKYU stay hotels Nishi Shinjuku

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Aug 17, 2024
Small rooms but well maintained. In such a small space they had provided microwave oven, induction oven, utensils, kettle, washbasin etc. which was very useful. We could cook indian food in the room itself. Excellent and courteous staff always willing to help. They really went out of the way to transport my luggage to another hotel . The lobbies in the floors need to be upgraded.

I have stayed at this hotel dozens of times but right now (March 2024 and previous months) it is totally unacceptable. The hotel is undergoing a full renovation of the entire building and guest rooms, all while continuing to accept reservations and charging full price for overnight stays.

Last week I cancelled a full week's reservation (15-21 March) because the entire lobby was covered in dust and only a narrow corridor led to the reception, which consisted of two small desks at knee hight (the front desk has been totally removed).

Today, I returned for another 1 night stay, and again, there is construction not only in the lobby but also on the guest floors. I was given room 1007, and right next to it, construction currently continues until well beyond 11 pm AT NIGHT. In 20 years of traveling I never experienced a hotel that kept construction going until deep in the night, let alone in Japan.

Usually a hotel shuts down entirely for such extensive renovation works and doesn't keep operations going in full. The website says nothing about this full-on construction project. Shameful and despicable business conduct, which I already reported to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's business section.

AVOID!

First the positives and then a negative. Great location, about 15 min walk to bustling central Shinjuku. Family Marts etc., eateries all around and metro 2 min walk away. The area is perfect as it's quieter, even close to a lovely park and all amenities at your door. Besides needing a good dust and coffee marks wiped off the wall, the hotel is clean and comfortable. There is free coffee and toiletries in the reception area the included washing machine/dryer in the room was a huge plus.

YOU WILL NOT GET EARLY ROOM ACCESS EVEN IF YOUR BAGS ARE WAITING IN YOUR ROOM. We arrived early morning knowing we would not be able to check in until the afternoon so staff stored our luggage as expected. When we arrived back at the hotel at about 1:30pm and our bags were nowhere to be found the receptionist informed us they had already been taken to our room as the room was ready. Excited about finally getting access to a shower and some rest after a long flight we anticipated this meant we would be able to enter the room. The receptionist then left to speak to who I imagine is a manager only to come back and tell us check in is at 3pm so we have to wait until then and if we wanted to access the room early it would cost 1,000 yen per person. I know check in stated 3pm but I found this to be exceptionally poor customer service. Seeing as our bags were already in the room it would have made absolutely no difference to the hotel for us to enter the room 1 1/2 hours early but instead the rigid rule left quite a very negative impression. We did end up getting access at 2:30pm only because an elderly Japanese gentleman wanted to check in at this time and they didn’t want to make him wait in the lobby.

The negative experience is such a shame because had this not have occurred I would return on my next trip.

Room tip: Easy to access as metro is only 2 mins from property or if you don't want to tackle the metro during peak times take a 15 min walk from Shinjuku Station.

About a 20 minute walk from Shinjuku station and just down the road from another subway stop (can’t recall which one), we had three rooms for two nights at a rate of around £110 per room per night.

Nothing wrong with the hotel. Small rooms but that is standard for Tokyo as I understand it. It’s basically a business hotel (and I have previously stayed in the brand on business) and designed to be ‘long stay’. They pack a lot into a small space and room had a (clothes) washing machine (and you are given detergent upon check-in), microwave, kettle and fridge. Comfortable bed, working wifi, decent shower, etc. There was a coffee machine in the lobby which provided drinkable coffee.

Breakfast was included in our rate and fairly basic but staff kept everything topped up and, if it was empty, were happy to top up things upon request. There were a few western options including scrambled egg and bread.

I’m not sure why this hotel has had so many negative reviews. We found the staff friendly and had reasonable English, were happy with the location and the facilities in the area (there is a MacDonalds next door, a convenience store across the road and several local restaurants within a couple of minutes walk!

When we researched it, it seemed reasonable value and we were happy.

Firstly, this is not Tokyu Stay Shinjuku, we made that mistake and checked in to the wrong hotel initially. It is about 15 to 20mins walk away from the heart of Shinjuku (and its bursting night life). So we had to walk quite a bit to the train stations (nearest was Nishi Shinjuku about 10mins walk) each time we wanted to travel (and inconvenient with luggage).

The room was very small (smallest I have ever stayed) - but that was quite expected in Tokyo I guess and at that price I am not sure if you will get any larger. Bed was comfortable and service was relatively good as they left new towels outside our room when we put a DND sign.

They didn't provide mineral waters (usually complimentary) and no safe deposit box. No frills hotel but just didn't cut it for us.

It’s a clean hotel. But it is the most ”blah” place we’ve stayed at in Japan. The problem is, I trusted the 3-Star rating. This is definitely not 3-Star. This is comparable to a La Quinta Inn in the US. And yet it’s further away from any conveniences (subway stations, etc).
The towels are so small and thin and scratchy. The tub/shower is teeny and cheap.
I can see this being a nice place to stay for extended stays for business, as it has a suit press, microwave, washing machine dryer. But the room is teeny, the bed is very small, the room is so small, there is no service available.
It’s very no frills and would have been fine had I known it was a 1 or 2 star. Then there would be no expectations. But when it claims to be 3-Star, I expect it to be more comfortable than what it is.
