“Salty pork knuckle ice cream. Who would have thought?”

Snow King Ice Cream
Restaurant details

I'd heard about Snow King through a offbeat tourism website and knew I had to go when I found out they serve Pork Knuckle ice cream. I love tasting unique variations of otherwise common food and this sounded too outrageous to miss.

The shop was closed when I arrived but Google Translate helped me decipher a sign on the door which said they were opening at 4pm on this particular day. I spent a few hours exploring the local area and returned shortly after 4. It was worth the wait.

It was no surprise but the Pork Knuckle recipe wasn't appetizing at all. Imagine chomping into a salty scoop of ice cream with chewy, fatty knobs of pig skin mixed through. I admit I didn't finish it. But I was very happy to have tried something so ridiculous which you would NEVER see for sale at a western ice creamery.

I don't mean to put anyone off - there are dozens of normal/delicious flavours available as well. But if you're a foodie who tends to the adventurous side of things, you absolutely need to try this place out.

I tried the curry and walnut flavours in this ice cream bar. The curry was quite good. Good quality ice cream. I'm making my own non-dairy ice creams at home and it's definitely a flavour I'd like to try myself :D

I had read about Snow King before i visited Taiwan but i came upon the ice cream parlour by chance after visiting Zhongshan Hall. The sign is on the building and some narrow stairs lead up to the parlour. I believe that the owner started his business in the 40's and now it is continued by his son or grandson. 72 flavors of ice cream are available but be aware it is not the cheapest i have tasted. I started with a cinnamon which was very good, then i ordered a wasabi flavored ice cream but i was told to wait a few minutes and drink some water before trying a second one. The wasabi was amazing as it really got up my nose, same as eating sushimi. They also serve curry, pig's knuckle, basil and many more unusual flavors.

Only in Taiwan and China where people can eat all kinds of creatures without any qualms can they think of ice cream with dead animals lurking inside. That itself is the first put off. We were brought here as part of our walking tour for a break and it was best avoidable.. I did end up having a passion fruit sorbet which was just about passable having lost my appetite and interest after hearing what kinds of weird flavors they have.

I ordered 2 different flavors - custard apple and Taiwan beer at TWD125 per scoop. The taste of custard apple was quite blank and the Taiwan beer was bitter with hardly any beer taste. The ice creams might suit people who are health conscious as they are neither sweet nor milky.
