From my first visit in 1979 until now I continue to be impressed by this event, watching the changing of the guard. We all walk with guards walking in perfect cadence all the way to Shrine and back. It is a gigantic moment to reflect on what our elders did for our peaceful life.

I was trying to find high and low on whether the guard changing ceremony will still continue in bad weather and could not find it. I took the risk and went to the shrine despite the rain and they did not disappoint.

We took a bus from Yuan Shan MRT Station, there are several numbers that will reach the Martyrs’ Shrine, just took 8 mins. Cross the road and the ceremony just began. It was solemn and well coordinated. Very pleasant to see the seriousness of these soldiers no matter under good or bad weather conditions.

There were many areas that was cordoned off to be out of bounds. So it was a rather quick visit of max 30 mins.

The Martyrs' Shine is one of Taiwan's best-known attractions. The Shrine commemorates those who gave their lives in the revolutionary wars -- against the Japanese, Communists and in the First and Second Taiwan Strait Crises. Some 400,000 people lost their lives in these conflicts. The guard is changed every hour, on the hour. The complicated drill routines are a wonder to behold.

I'm so glad that I stopped here after visiting the Grand Hotel. This was nearby and I'd read that it was worth seeing the changing of the guard. It's definitely true. I got there just at noon and they had already started. Overall, the process took about 25 minutes. Really impressive. It's solemn. You are asked not to speak during the process. You can follow the guards and take pictures which many of us did. The shrine itself is beautiful too. Check out my pictures.

They do the changing of the guard at the top of each hour so arrive a little before.
