Review of Checheng Station

Checheng Station
Ranked #1 of 20 things to do in Shuili
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 8 January 2017

This is a station built to support the logging industry in the early years of Taiwan.

At one part of this attraction is a beautiful lake. There is mock-up logging area to simulate how the trees are processed and moved. Lastly, there are lots of photo-opportunities at the Checheng Station itself.

One can take a train from Jiji train station to Checheng station but I am not sure about the schedule.

We had a spare day to fill during our 3 night stay in Sun Moon Lake. Since it was forecast to rain, we decided a bus ride to somewhere outside SML would be a good option. Checheng was a short half hour bus ride away by bus from Shuishe Visitor Centre in SML.

As it turned out, it was cloudy but didn't really rain during our visit. Checheng is the terminus for the small local Jiju train line and the site of a small village with a small logging musuem and shops mainly geared to selling local products such as plums and wood related products. A few eateries and snack shops.

Just after our arrival, a train pulled into the station and a group of what looked like amateur photographers excitedly snapped away. There was a low number of tourists and it felt quite relaxing to stroll around surrounded by mountains and very little traffic apart from the odd public bus.

Worth visiting for a couple of hours if you are in the area.

This place is one hidden gem, scenic spot with trains to spam away on your camera. This is one of my favourite (short) stop in Taichung, an ad-hoc itinerary recommended by my driver.

Additionally, there is one wood logging gift shop that sells slices of wood log (cypress wood, sandalwood etc) for its scent, which can be one of the more interesting souvenir to bring home.

Not only the old railway station is interesting to visit, but also the Log museum is worth visiting. Enjoy the visit on a sunny day.

We took a train from Jiji old street. It was a fun train ride for the kids. This area used to be an old logging mill and has been converted into a logging museum.
There are things for small kids to do like feeding the ducks and fishes. There are a few cafes and restaurants. We had our lunch here for the day. This place is good as a lunch stop-over if you are en route to sun moon lake.
