steep walk uphill but then fantastic close views of the puffins that come in during the evening - just like a nature documentary!

This is the place for bird watchers, but if you're not into that it's a wonderful hike anyway in an extended undulating meadow, from where you get stunning views of close and distant islands that dot Norway's Atlantic coast. A treat for walkers.

We detoured to Runde on our way out of Alesund and absolutely loved our trip. The drive from Alesund to Runde is beautiful. It has a lovely ferry ride from Sulesund to Hareid that is very different from the fjord ferries in Norway with brilliant views of the Atlantic Ocean. Then there's a spectacular bridge just before Runde. On the island itself, the trek to Lundeura (a bird watching site known for puffin) is a pleasure, with great views all along the hour-long walk from the car park. The walk is along a well-marked trail but across wide, grassy land with plenty of flowers and sheep.

We aren't especially bird-lovers though we do try to make time for wildlife on our holidays, so we didn't really time our visit for the puffin (we visited in the afternoon). We still found it a very rewarding day as we did see a few puffin (though not very close, as we would have in the evening), besides plenty of other bird life including kittiwake, guillemot, fulmar, razorbill, skua and probably many other birds we couldn't identify. We were even lucky enough to see a white-tailed eagle. The best part of the experience was just sitting at the cliff edge with other bird-watchers, looking at the birds flying above and below us, the Atlantic Ocean with its beautiful colours and the green and black of the cliffs all around us.

Runde was a bit out of the way for us, but in the end, definitely worth the visit. We would highly recommend it if you like the outdoors, even if you aren't specifically a bird watcher.

We didn't know much about Runde Island before we got there but decided to go anyway because I've always wanted to see puffins. Turns out, the island is beautiful, the puffins are cute and it is really easy to fill up a couple of days. We wandered over the tracks on the island a couple of times. We went for a swim in the super clear, tropical coloured, rather refreshing (cold) water. We took a boat ride around the island being told the fascinating history of the island, hearing about the shipwrecks and treasure (you can see the treasure at the visitors centre) and of course, seeing all the birds and their nesting sites. And we relaxed. Keen to go back again sometime soon when I have a better zoom lens for my camera!

During a holiday in Norway, we really wanted to see puffins. And we were lucky, we got to see lots of them up close.
The walk up to Lundeura was quite steep, especially the first part. When we reached the top many more people had come to see the puffins. Lots of photographers and others who were interested. The cliffs are really steep so keep a close eye on the kids.
Most puffins were seen around 21.00 when they came back from the sea, some with small fish to feed to their young.
So beautiful.
