First of all, we are not bird watchers or into the hobby. We went to Runde island by coincident. However it turned out to be a fantastic experience, we walked up to the various bird areas 3 times in the 24 hour period we stayed there. We got very qualified information at the camping place at Goksør, they are extremely service minded and knowledgable. The walk up takes 45-60 minutes and is on good tracks. Different areas for different birds. All is interesting but the main attraction for us was the Atlantic Puffin (Lundefugl). You could see them during the entire day flying between the ocean and nest in mountain side. It's catching several fishes in same tour and often diving 10 meter, or even down to 30, thereafter delivering the goods to the small baby birds in nest. It's a fascinating view and experience. The Lundefugl is very nice looking, something related to parrots. It didn't seemed scared by human beings rather curious. The really highlight is in the evening (around 8-9 pm) where all of them do the final flight home from the sea, and it's a lot of them. They spend some time socializing among them self which is very interesting to watch. Some of them could get as close as a half meter or so. GREAT EXPERIENCE and absolutely RECOMMENDED. Remember to bring your camera, video or so, as long as your good mood. Among the other birds it's worth mention the Sea Eagle which it there.

A trip to Norway would not be complete without a visit to Runde. This island is a paradise for birders like myself, but I truly believe that anyone who appreciates nature would fall in love with it. The island is very small and has very few amenities--no real food or gas and limited lodgings (the info center has very nice modern apartments to rent but are a bit expensive). The main thing to do on the island is to book a boat trip to go see the bird cliff from the water (book the gorgeous wood stained boat with Bjorn!!) or to hike up to this nature reserve and see the bird cliffs from above. We did both and loved them both--different perspectives and different timing for us. We hiked the cliffs in the evening--from around 8-midnight--and got to sit and watch the thousands of puffins, shags, razorbills, gannets, kittiwakes and murres come in to shore after a long day of fishing at sea...it was breathtaking. It was one of those natural wonders a person usually only sees on nature documentaries. Just magical. The hike up is a steep one, but you will want to stop to watch the nesting Great Skuas in the gorgeous hillsides. I also watched skylarks display and wheatears and pipits do their things amongst the hillsides. It will take about an hour to get up to the cliffs and then you can just sit and enjoy or walk around. If I had had time, I would've definitely hiked up there at least 2 nights to enjoy the evening spectacle. Take your camera and prepare to be amazed!
Don't forget to enjoy the birdlife at sea level as well...lots of gulls and oystercatchers and ducks nesting among the rocky coastlines. You can also see white tailed eagles anywhere hunting around the island too.

Beautiful place to visit and make a walking! Unfortunately I didn't see the Puffins, traditional this time of the year, because had some clouds and fog..the wind was a little bit strong.
I want back again!!! I think July is perfect to see them! :)
Many families, kids...nice nice nice!!!

If you love remote locations, endless vistas, and wildlife then Runde is for you! It's a bit of a drive to get there over some breathtaking bridges but worth it.
If you like to hike then park at the end of the road on the eastern side of the island and hike UP the paved path to the grassy top of this island. There are several routes, all of which lead along the cliffs where the birds nest. There are some places you can see the birds and others where it is more difficult. Staying until sunset, when the puffins come off of the water, will allow you to sit on the steep bluffs where they stay at night. Not for the faint of heart though...the bluffs are very steep but when puffins are walking all around you it's all worth it!
Wear waterproof shoes...this island is full of springs and the ground is spongy...the water seeps up around your shoes every time you step.
If you want to get a better view of the birds take a trip on one of the small boats that take tourists out of the small harbor around the island. We went out on the "Aquilla" with the local high school teacher who has a business running the boat during the summer. He knows the names of all of the birds in every language! I love bird watching and have truly never seen so many birds in one place...on the water, diving into the water, flying over the water, on the rocks over the water...quite amazing. The most spectacular part was seeing tens of thousands of gannets soaring on the thermals drifting up the cliffs and diving into the water to fish. I'll never forget it!

We were nearby and travelled here by car on a saturday afternoon. A local, who seemed to be the owner of Goksøyr camping adviced to come in the evening if the goal is to see the atlantic puffin, or "lundefugl". The date was a little early as well.
There was no sight of the puffin, but we had a great time! We saw three eagles very close, a raven and scores of gannet. Not to mention the great view of the open ocean and the mountains.
