The Quinta das Buganvilias is quite simply magical. Spending a couple of nights at the quinta, a former organic fruit farm, is a relaxing and unique experience – despite its close proximity to the airport. We were made to feel exceptionally welcome by Ana, whose gentle, generous and helpful hospitality made our stay especially memorable.

Step through one of the tall camellia hedge ‘doorways’ and discover a patchwork quilt of wild and overgrown orchard ‘rooms’, with orange, guava, banana, custard apples and other tropical fruit trees. Beyond the orchards are polytunnels with rose trees and colourful gerberas, a chicken enclosure, and beyond that, the quinta’s biggest surprise – wear trainers and take a torch into a long dark tunnel to discover what awaits you at the other end.

Although the quinta is right next to Faial’s airport, there are only a handful of flights each day, so for the most part your stay will be perfectly peaceful. Breakfast is a joy. The little breakfast room overlooks the sea. Help yourself to freshly squeezed orange juice, delicious local cheeses, and an assortment of fresh excellent local fare, including homemade guava and loquat jams and fresh fruit salad. We were delighted to be able to enjoy orange pekoe and green leaf teas from Europe’s only tea plantation on the nearby island of Sao Miguel.

Our tastefully furnished room shared a kitchenette with another room. We had all the kitchen equipment we needed to conjure up a meal, which we enjoyed in the garden at one of several peaceful outside seating areas. The quinta has a decently stocked honesty bar that’s full of character, with an old mill and old farm implements, as well as a good selection of books about the area.

We did our own catering, stocking up beforehand at the huge well-stocked Continente Modelo supermarket in Horta, but perhaps you will find a simple snack at a bar used by locals next door to the quinta. Alternatively there’s a restaurant and a supermarket a 20-minute walk away (along a road with speeding traffic), or you could take a taxi to one of several excellent restaurants in Horta – Ana has produced some useful maps with recommended restaurants marked. For a unique restaurant experience of cooking your own food at your table on a hot basalt stone, visit Canto da Doca (booking ahead is advisable) .

We stayed at the Quinta for three nights in June and loved the beauty of both the gardens and the understated elegance of our room, which was immaculate with a very comfortable bed and classical old portuguese furniture. Anna Oliveira is a very kind host and most helpful when I fractured my wrist during a lavada walk, even offering to take us to Horta hospital herself, though we took a taxi. The breakfast was simple but adequate and delicious and there is an honesty bar available. The Quinta did not provide evening meals as expectedt, so a car is necessary or taxi into town. You can easily walk to the airport and if you have a car, there is a petrol station a few yards from the Quinta.

We would definitely stay again if we come back.

Absolutely delightful place to stay! We were very impressed with the beautifully, well kept, classical, unpretentious, accommodation. Walking distance from the extremely calm airport.
We were impressed with the exceptionally gentle hospitality. The owners, Ana and Pedro, were absolutely extraordinary in making sure all our requirements were met with excellence (early picnic breakfasts, online check-in, printing our boarding cards…)
We thoroughly recommend having dinner at the Quinta. We had an outstandingly delicious meal of homegrown, organic vegetables and an exceptional fresh fish caught by the owner of the Quinta.
A place to recommend and to return to.

The hotel is just around the corner from the airport, you can see even the landing strip from the hotel; but as there are only a few airplanes landing or taking off per day, the peaceful atmosphere is not disturbed. It is a rustic hotel in different old stone houses, our room was a little bit dark, but very spacious and clean. The surrounding huge and wild garden is very beautiful. The breakfast is served in a nice small room (feels like in the living room of the hosts) with ocean view. Limited, but excellent choice of local cheeses, cold cuts and fruits from the garden. Very friendly and helpful hosts.
Good location to explore the island.

The Quinta das Buganvilias is a charming bed and breakfast in an old farmhouse situated very close to the airport in Faial and about 10 km from Horta. The accomodation is in a beautifully converted barn and is very comfortable and clean. The breakfasts are excellent and the host charming and very helpful. The quinta gardens are well worth a half day visit on their own. Ask Manuel to show you around, they are so extensive that you could get lost in them on your own! The only drawback is that there are no restaurents within walking distance so you will need a car or use taxis. We would definitely choose to stay there again.
