Review of Pratapgad Fort

Pratapgad Fort
Ranked #4 of 37 things to do in Satara

Reviewed 13 July 2018

Pratapgad fort is located approximately 25 kilometres of Mahabaleshwar, a popular hill station in the area. The fort is situated at 3,540 ft above sea level.

The fort can be divided into the lower fort and upper fort.

The upper fort was built on the top of the hill. It is roughly square. It has several permanent buildings, including a temple to the god Mahadev. Fort is surrounded by sheer cliffs with drops of up to 250m. Goddess Bhawani mandir is at the lowerfort .

Main entrance of the fort is quite narrow. There are many hiding bunker around . From the buttom to top there are approximately 1000 steps . Height of each is steps are bit high . Climb slowly . Guide will force you to cover the distance first so that he can go with next set of guest. One should take a qualified guide who can explain most about this historical fort.

There are small restaurent between lower and upper fort . You can enjoy typical maharastrian food . Lush green Jawali valley add to scenic beauty.

It is advised to reach this fort early . As day passed this place becomes hot and climbing up to the fort becomes tiring . We traveled on 27-Jan-2018 still we felt hot at around 1000 AM

lot of State transport busses ply from Mahabaleshwar to Pratapgarh fort. During peak season this place gets crowded and getting parking slot very near the fort becomes difficult.

Pratapgarh is located around 25 km away form Mahabaleshwar and around 110 km away from Pune City. If you planning for road trip by bike you will definitely love it. The trip will provide the beautiful memories to cherish for lifetime.

Pratapgad is a nice old fort but poorly maintained to the point of being downright dangerous if you are traveling with children, you better not leave their hand as there is a calamity waiting to happen. One side of the fort the wall is all broken and there is a steep fall, where if you are not careful, there is an accident waiting to happen. The whole place is commercialised though and you will find people trying to sell services such as guides, astrology or food and drink. Maybe we went in the wrong season but still I would say it's not that great as it's sold to you by tour guides. A decent climb will take you to statue of Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj which is magnificent and well maintained but remaining parts are a let down frankly. You can enjoy nice views of the Koyna valley, I believe any fort would be nice to visit in monsoon as the valley around is lush and green.

Dear all , I visited there today and I am out of words about what I saw. A kid ( 13 - 14 years ) was almost dead because of stone fell on him on spot. God give their family all courage to go through this. They were on summer vacations and that turned to this.

So you travel all the way ghat about 40 to 50 mins from MAHABLESHWAR and What you get are :

Fort is not at all maintained. There was no security , no proper way to walk, all was like damaged with stones lying here and there, with kids it is not at all recommended. No nearby hospital, doctors available.
