We spent a few hours in Kolhapur and visited the Town Hall museum, a neo-Gothic building which was recently restored. This is one place where locals obviously stay away from, as there were no crowds! Inside, there is a motley collection of objects on display, of little interest or significance eg maps, stoneware, chinaware. Afterwards, we were taken to the streets and local market where we saw a shop where chappal (shoes) were made and sold. The displays were colourful and goods were cheap to purchase. At the end of the day, we were treated to 'mardani khel', a traditional martial arts performance, known to very families in Kolhapur. We were treated to an impressive display of swordsmanship by 3 generations of performers, the youngest of whom looked about 3 years old! An interesting day. We also visited the New Palace museum (missable) and the Mahalakshmi Temple (recommended).

Amazing city.... Kolhapur is a junction where the valour and pride of Maratha empire, spirituality and the traditions of Kolhapuri food meet...Heaven for people who like spicy Maratha food....Be it misal pav, spicy mutton/ chicken dishes or sea food. Specialty of Kolhapur food is pandhra/ tamda rassa which is must to have every time you sit for a meal....People who look for spiritual guidance should must visit mahalakshmi temple, jothiba temple....Shopoholics can busy buying handcrafted things and one must buy Kolhapuri chappals which u can pair with traditional clothing or jeans n tee...One must visit the new palace and panhala fort who come here to get submerged in the wonderful history of this city....Many places to visit and amazing experience

It is the most beautiful temple on Sholapur. It is the first shaktipeeth in Maharashtra. The way the pujari changes sarees in minutes is fabulous.
