This is a wonderful walk from the village to the ruined castle towering high above it. The walk takes about 30 minutes each way and the views from the top are breath taking. You can even see Montsegur castle high up in its peak down the valley. Well worth a visit.

In order to get to the castle of Roquefixade, you have to get up a steep path. Be sure you'll be out of breath when you get there.
The castle is in complete ruins, but you get a pretty good view on what it should have looked like. Neverthless, it may be a good idea to read about it beforehand as there are no information signs.
From the castle you have a beautiful view on the surroundings and the nearby village of Roquefixade.

There is a fantastic circular walk for all the family which incorporates a very impressive Cathar castle,. The walk starts in the historic, pretty village of Roquefixade climbs gently through ancient beach tree woodland, between rocky limestone crags. After a slightly steeper section you arrive on a limestone plateau above the castle, offering magnificent views to the higher Pyrenees, a glimpse of another great Cathar castle, Monsegur and also down into the lush green, open valley below. Once you traverse the top, wide ridge line, which also gives you open views towards Carcassonne & the 'Montagne Noir', you then finally descend to the castle itself. You can scramble into the fortress, but please pay attention, especially with children, as there is an unprotected 100m+ drop from the castle walls! You then descend again relatively steeply back to the village for an ice cream or cool beer at the gite d'etape! This walk should take you about 2 hours and is suitable for children from about 6-7 years old. Boots/walking shoes are highly recommended. You should carry water. it's a steep but short climb, and is well worth it for the view at the end. Read up the history of the castle before going up, as there are no plaques or boards to describe the wonderful story behind this fortress, perched on top of a mountain-top.

There is a final scramble up to the flag-pole, but beware of the imminent midge attack when you do reach the top!

The Chateau de Roquefixade is a ruined castle built on a cliff overlooking the village of Roquefixade. Its 5 miles (8km) of Lavelant,France.
Its one of the so-called Cathar castles. The side did provide a place of refuge for the Cathars at the time of the Albigensian Crusade. At the end of the 13th century,Roquefixade became a stronghold at the end of a line of royal fortresses built along the Corbieres hills,to keep watch on the territory of the count of Foix.

The walk to Chateau de Roquefixade starts from Roquefixade village square, which is well sign posted.
You pass farmland and steadily climb up a well maintained gravel track.
From the track you will reach a grass verge on the right steadily walk up some steps, continue on path walking through trees and bushes, the Chateau should always be on your right.
Eventually you should reach the ruins of the outside walls, you walk through this and follow the small path that leads you to the Chateau.Great care should be taken on this path as it can be very slippery and dangerous.Once inside the Chateau you can explore the ruins and get fantastic views of Ariege mountains, the Pyrenees,Montsegur,Les Corbieres and Le Lauagais.

This walk from Roquefixade village square to Chateau de Roquefixade should take about 45 minuites return.
