I was with a group of 16 bellringers who travel around we were made very welcome and were served our drinks very quickly. We had pre-ordered our food and it was brought out in very good time and in excellent condition. Each dish was well cooked , well presented and tasty. As we were all senior citizens , we ordered out food from the senior citizens special menu whereby each of us was able to have two courses for £7.25. some of us had coffee after our meals and all of my party were well satisfied with our experience.

What a shame, when we visited as a family of 4 adults my sister in law was not feeling great, but as it was a goodbye meal after a lovely Christmas visit together following a bereavement in the family, she wanted to make the effort and come out with us. The menu on the wall looked really nice and catered for the majority of us however, we ordered a round of drinks and asked about food and we were told we would have to wait for another half hour until the "girls got in" had a round of drinks and waited until 6.15pm to go to the bar to ask for food. When we asked if there was any possibility of ordering soup and a sandwich which was, admittly on the lunch menu, we were told quite curtly that no we could not have that, no offer to talk to the chef about it, Just a blank no, now I understand that if a restaurant is busy or the establishment has a lot of bookings then yes, that would be difficult to go off menu, but thus pub had two reserved tables and around 6 people in the bar, so actually this request would not have been hard to comply with. Totally disappointed with the response, we paid for our drinks and left, maybe they don't need the £80 + that we would have spent, well their loss, we won't come again and we will never recommend to anyone locally. There are other, better establishments for both food and service quality.

If you are looking for somewhere traditional where you are unlikely to find children "ruling the roost" this is the venue for you. Whilst children are welcome to eat with their parents in the restaurant the clientele of this pub tend to be couples or friends who value good beer and traditional pub surroundings. Rare in this day and age in towns.
The food is hearty and good value and portions are substantial.
The staff are friendly and the beer is well kept. In the winter a traditional open fire will be roaring in the grate,
A real pleasure to find a piece of Old England where you are made to feel welcome and relax over a pint and a meal.
