My friend and I are in Rome to celebrate our 50th birthdays. We are well-travelled foodies but also generally understanding patient people. At first the service was good. We were offered English menus, the wine order was taken quickly and appeared promptly, our food order was taken and appetizers arrived in a reasonable time period. About 15 minutes after we were finished with them, and were starting to wonder where our entrees were, the waiter dropped a dessert menu on our table and left. It took a few minutes to get his attention to ask where our entrees were. His expression told us he had forgotten them but they did arrive in fairly short order, and the dessert menu removed. However, after we ate them, we sat for 40 minutes unattended before we were able to get their attention to ask for a dessert menu. Our order was taken by the waiter while he set the table next to us, and arrived when he flung it on our table with both on the same plate, neither set in front of us. We finished our desserts and another 30 minutes went by before we could get anyone's attention to ask for the bill. The food was above average but was all but eclipsed by terrible service.
