I was actually booked into an hotel in Rethymnon called the HOTEL IDEON i was visiting my Daughter and Grandchildren to surprise them while on holiday they stayed at the CRETAN SUN four miles away
I had issues with my hotel and when i discussed this with the owners of CRETAN SUN they kindly allowed me to stay with my family for a few nights
They made my holiday the CRETAN SUN is run by a family who cannot do enough for you the rooms are family self contained rooms basic but comfortable nice little pool bar serves food throughout the day at low cost alcohol averages about 5 euros they spend time to get to know you the breakfasts are adequate and enough to see you through the day
The hotel is about 5 minutes walk to the main strip which is typically Greek TAVERANAs food is excellent in these establishments
15 MINUTES to sea and beach
You want a relax good people around you then book this hotel very nice people Thank you for rescuing my holiday i will come again

Room tip: Any room the top floors to the side of the hotel overlook the mountains and rural areas very nice and peaceful

We stayed here for a family break for a week in August. The apartments themselves are basic but
clean. They are only a 2* and fine for the rating. The family that run them are friendly and mostly helpful. I found the drinks at the bar a little expensive and the cocktails were to be honest quite poor and not really proper cocktails. We didnt eat there but other guests said the snacks were nice. There is a lidl just down the road and another supermarket within walking distance. Platanes has some nice tavernas and we didn’t have a bad meal. The chicken fillet gyros from
The VW Beetle cafe being our favourites for €2.80. I would say to future travellers to PLEASE TAKE CARE ON THE ROADS !. The pavements in platanes are very narrow and in our opinion the traffic was busy and drivers are so erratic . We took a taxi in to Rethymno old town a few times and it’s very picturesque and vibrant with lots of lovely shops, bars and restaurants, one night on our way back in the taxi we were discussing amongst ourselves that there must be a lot of traffic incidents in the area due to the poor driving quality and the next thing we heard a Big Bang & two young lads had been knocked off their scooter right besides us. Our taxi driver stopped to check they were ok which they seemed to be or at least they both got up albeit hobbling !. We also noticed a few tributes along the roads which were obviously for previous incidents. I would definitely not feel comfortable driving there or cycling. We have visited a few other Greek islands where we have driven and hired cycles and never given it a second thought but in Rethymnon and the surrounding area it was like a free for all every day. Even just walking down the road I felt we had to be so aware of the crazy drivers and have our wits about us. I can’t speak for the rest of the island obviously but I would personally not go back to crete again, this is not a reflection of the apartments as they were fine for what we paid and expected of a 2*.

The hotel is average, but is good since you don’t really spend much time there. The stuff are super friendly and helpful. Breakfast is good, down side air conditioner is not included but you can pay extra for it.

We stayed here for 4 nights... A lovey small quiet hotel . The pool was lovely and warm and the staff was very friendly.. The rooms were basic but clean exactly what you would expect from a 2 star ... Looking forward to coming back.

We enjoyed our stay at The Cretan Sun. The family are very friendly indeed and can’t do enough for you. The apartments are very simple and reflect the price but are kept very clean. We had a room with private balcony looking over the pool. I am a poor sleeper but it wasn’t noisy. The location was good for walking into the town around 10 minutes. We preferred to eat in Rethymnos as we found atmosphere and restaurants more atmospheric and better food for me as a coeliac. A taxi is 9 euros in to the town. Improvements I could recommend to the Cretan Sun at low cost would be better kitchen facilities eg more plates and larger cups, tea towels and basic things like washing up liquid and washing up cloths, would make a big difference. But it’s fine for the price.
