“Small museum, interesting but small collection”

Mokpo Modern History Museum

Housed in a smallish red brick building -- the former Japanese Consulate -- this museum focusses on the first half of the 20th century when the Japanese ruled Korea and used Mokpo as one of its key bases.

There are models of important buildings of the period, pointing out the architectural features that were in fashion as Japan adopted Western styles of design. There are a number of old photographs of Mokpo streets, alas not in very good condition. There are also some objects from the period, but not well explained.

The building itself, while somewhat pretty on the outside is rather bare inside. Doesn't have any furnishings left of its period.

Entry = 2,000 won.

The building may be up a small rise, but it really doesn't offer any views because it isn't high enough. For views, go up Yudalsan instead, which is only a few hundred metres to the Northwest of this museum.

Mokpo was done as a day trip from Gwangju by fast train. The cities are close enough that it was no rush at all.

Great way to learn the role of Mokpo in Korean history. Lots of great pictures from turn of the century (19th Century), Lots of moving documentary on the Japanese occupation. Two buildings. Go to the one on the hill first (the old Japanese Embassy) with the bomb shelter exhibition. Some pictures can be extreme,and you may want to stay with your children.

The neighborhood where this old building is located was Japanese areas with school, consular office and 100 year old cathedral. You can see the cycle of history since Mokpo at that time functioned as 5th largest harbour in Korean peninsula.

Not bad for a free museum. The photographic exhibit of the Japanese occupation was very comprehensive. It was interesting to see how the city has changed over the years.
