Owner description: Royston Cave is a bee-hive shaped man made cave cut into the chalk beneath Melbourn Street and decorated with religious and secular carvings on almost every wall. Some of the carvings are easily recognised as the Crucifixion, St Catherine, St Christopher and St Lawrence, but others still defy positive identification. Most do however appear to be medieval in style. There are numerous theories as to the origin and use of the cave although none are conclusive owing to a lack of hard historical evidence. The theories include the cave having been a hermitage, an early Freemason's lodge, a gaol and a secret meeting place for the Knights Templar. Interestingly, the latest research carried out by the curator at the Royal Armouries Museum indicates that the carvings are unlikely to have been made before 1350.

This is one of those venues that you can enjoy in a 30 minute visit. To be honest, no-one REALLY knows exactly why there is a cave under the high street in Royston.....did the Knights Templars dig the cave? Was it some local people from a by-gone age? Whatever it is, it's quite an interesting place to visit. It's a tiny venue so only a small number of people can attend each time (I think it is every 30 minutes).
You walk down into the cave, stand around and listen to a pre-recorded explanation of the wall carvings whilst a guide shines their torch on the highlighted aspects of the taped documentary.

If you're interested in old history this is one for you. Its a bit tricky to find but go to the main crossroads in the town centre and the cave is below it!! Really interesting but get a guide book or better still a guide as there is so much on the walls of the cave you really need it all explained to you!

We visited the Royston Cave having watched a documentary on tv on the Knights Templar which spoke about the carvings. This is a hidden gem tucked away in Royston amongst the shops!
If you are remotely interested in the Knights Templar, or even if you aren't, this place will leave you wondering how it came about and what its purpose might have been.
Definitely worth a visit.

Interesting bit of history but small. So don't expect a massive cave system. Connected to the knight templer . Great Guide and worth it . Carvings on chalk walls from that period. Spend the day relaxing in area and visit . Plus see the Town, park, local historic walk buy the golf course and enjoy a good pub meal. Recommend the Manor or the postie.
