Owner description: According to legend, two brothers kept trying to return a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, to the Sumida River only to have it returned to them the next day. This temple located in Tokyo's Asakusa district was built to honor her.

WE were there on a sunday and there were lots of japanese tourists so it was pretty croweded but nevertheless nice...of course if you have seen the Kyoto temples this will not impress you but for us it was the first temple so it was nice!!

It’s definitely worth a visit but it is extremely busy. The buildings are stunning but there wasn’t as much to do or see here as we had hoped. Maybe best not to plan too many hours here.

I love Japan's temples and shrines. Because this is one of the biggest, it's one of the most touristy. The floods of people made it impossible to appreciate the beauty of the shrine inside the temple. In addition, people were largely ignoring the no photographs signs which is quite disrespectful.

I recommend visiting the palace garden which costs about 300¥ to enter. That was very beautiful and included some impressive indoors Japanese art.

The actual temple and the architecture are amazing, although not particularly unique, i.e. it is very similar to most big Japanese temples. The markets and general surrounds are fun, and the further you venture into the side streets the better this becomes. Definitely visit though.
