We booked this hotel for a week of luxury and relaxation and to celebrate my 'big' birthday and I'm very sad to say how disappointed we were with our experience at the Abama. Our first impression at check-in was frosty and functional. We were offered a glass of champagne, however were left standing at the desk for ages - other 5* hotels would always offer you a seat while they sorted out details. We were informed that the hotel's main gym was being refurbished, which was a great shame as we usually use the gym most days on holiday. We were offered an alternative gym at their golf club, which was a few minutes away by car and very poorly equipped. Also, once the conference people arrived, you had to queue for a machine as it was so busy. I have to say the hotel for the first couple of days was pleasant and peaceful. Our room was very nice and the adult pool area was beautiful, with very attentive staff. However, once the hotel filled up with the conference, peace was broken. The breakfast restaurant turned into a school canteen, very noisy with queues for tables, and the poor staff were chasing around trying to cope and apologising for the chaos. Also the adult pool area turned into a holiday camp atmosphere whenever the conference was on 'free time'. We were even moved off our sunbeds at the end of the second afternoon so they could move furniture to set up for a conference event that evening around the pool. The restaurants were adequate, with MB probably being our least favourite. We were also not informed when booking or even at check-in that there was a price limit on our half board allowance - be aware that this is unlikely to cover 3 courses at any of the restaurants without going above your allowance, and only 1 course at MB. It was only when we thought we should double check at reception were we informed of this half board limit, and was told to read their 'terms and conditions' Not something I would normally wish to do on my annual holiday ...... We spoke to reception twice about the inconvenience of the conference, once during our stay and once at check out. I asked both times for our grievances to be brought to the managers attention, however we've had no feedback from the hotel whatsoever. My advice to you is check that there is no conference on during your stay, otherwise you are made to feel like an insignificant guest. This is an extremely expensive hotel that doesn't justify the cost and we will not be returning.
