“Museum pretty nice, the keller a disaster”

Our experience was a very mixed bag. We started with the Lavakeller, which seemed to be a nice trip underground. However, the tour was only in German, and although I speak some German (and my native language Dutch is pretty close to German) the tourguide was impossible to understand. He was just mumbling in a very fast and monotonous way and had the presentation skills of a naked mole-rat. The result was a very boring tour that seemed to drag on forever (and the kids got really really bored and annoyed altough they like caves in general). The formations of basalt blocks on the ceiling looked nice though.

The museum was pretty nice though, and also the kids really liked it. Museum is more geared towards children then towards adults, and the information on display may be a bit basic for people with an interest and some prior knowledge of geology/vulcanism.

Price of tickets were a bit on the high side.

Very interesting and unique! Great! Even for young kids. The entire area is full of ancient geology.

I was alone to visit the lava dome and I made the underground program in the lava basement which was very nice and interesting. The guide was very friendly and the group also. The single thing what I did not enjoy it was that in mine the light was to poor so you could not see really everything around you.

A really informative museum which kept the attention of all our party, from 7 to 70 years old !

We also had the mine visit - we knew that the visit was only in German, but it would be much appreciated if you could provide an English or French language Factsheet. I am a volunteer guide at another attraction and we make an effort to have multi-lingual guides as often as possible (for less visitors...) but if we do not have the right guide then all visitors are given a laminated factsheet for the tour.

Excellent visit. Do take something warm for the trip to the basalt caves but don't worry if you forget as along with a hard hat you are given a waterproof jacket. Sensible shoes are best. The tour is in German but if you have been in the museum first you will be well informed..it's worth doing even if you haven't got the language skills. There is one tour a day at 1.30pm so timing it right is important. The museum has a free audio guide in English which is excellent. A top trip for all the family. Drive through Mendig and you will find an excellent Gelateria too..it's on the left as you leave town.
