It's about a five-minute drive north of Darmstadt. The F/U bus (bushalte #22) can pick you up and transport you there from the train station (3.2 Euro a person). Cost 13 Euro for the two entry tickets (one for museum, one for the pit). On the pit walk, it's a fair walk (maybe 2 miles round-trip). Check on guides ahead of time....most only speak German. If you are into dinosaurs and ancient history....well worth the trip. They have a small cafe there. The bus, on the way back into town....stops in the middle and you could pause to have dinner. Guide knows a great deal. Would advise against the trip on seriously cold days. Would allocate 3 hours total.

The visitor center itself is relatively limited. There are some cool installation as an (animated) journey into the borehole they drilled to get the origin of the crater. But you are done with the visitor center in max. one hour. But with a guided tour it is really exiting. We did it with the children, great! It takes 2 hours. Some things to keep in mind: you need sturdy shoes (you can borrow some, for me kind of icky). Bring water and a cap. The bistro is ok, nothing great, as in every museum. So, in conclusion: it is worth to see especially if you are interested in fossils.

If you go there, you should definetly go by car, because public transportation is not very well connected to this place.

I recommend also to join a guided tour.

If you are interested in fossils it is good place to visit.

This was an organised visit with a guide as part of university geology seminar. Hence comments will not apply to many. It was of such great interest along with questions and debate time flew so never made it to the bottom. Our guide was a mine of information.
Added a great deal to the visit to the exhibition in the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt.
The visitor centre was a bit spartan. This said it is a major world site and should be visited. If interested there is a good book on sale about the Messel and its treasures.

We visited it last year in summer. We just managed to get on the last tour, but there was no time left to see the museum on site. However, the tour was informative and there are some fossils found available to see and our guide explained us the history, the process of excavation and what they found there.
