Budget Friendly Rooms, Best Food in Alona

Review of Trudi's Place
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Dec 20, 2010
Stayed in the lovely Trudi's Place after checking out from Hayahay (see related reviews by Bimmerman135) and finally found what we were looking for.

The hotel has 8 rooms that provides most of the basics: Hot & cold fresh water shower (Note: most of the hotels in Alona have salty water showers); Remote controlled AC and TV: Free WIFI; Own balcony (Deluxe rooms have balconies overlooking the beach while Standard rooms have balconies overlooking the backyard) Full sized bed with proper pillows and clean sheets. It may become a bit noisy at night due to the band playing in the neighboring resort, but it wasn't a hassle for me.

This hotel is run by a really nice old lady who has built-up the hotel from honest to goodness hard work and industry. After reading from an old newspaper article framed on the wall, we discovered that Madame Trudy was one of the original settlers in Alona who stared out selling dried fish, then made her name as a fantastic cook who later on opened her restaurant serving budget friendly meals to residents and tourist.

This hotel has been a labor of love and it shows in all the details and the fantastic service that it provides to its guest. Noteworthy is the kindness and hospitality that Madame Trudy, her children and her staff would provide their guest. This hotel is a fine example that a hotel needs not a 5 star rating in order to provide fantastic service. On the basis of that I would definitely recommend staying here.

My recommendation does not however end on that basis alone, I would most certainly recommend having your meals here. The food is great, the prices are reasonable and the servings are sumptuous. The freshness and quality of the food is consistent, the service quick and prompt and the ambiance of having your meals al fresco and within a stone's throw away of the surf guarantees a satisfying experience.

And though I went to Bohol for the diving, this hotel has no dive outfit. But I would definitely stay again here. NB: I dived with Choi of the SIerra Madre Divers and their service and gears are par excellence.

Found this resort just from passing by, and it was an amazing find. Apart from good value for under 2000 with breakfast for 2, Trudi's Place has a great history behind it. Met the owner Trudi and she is one awesome lady. She is one of the original settlers on that beach, from providing good education to her children by selling fish to putting up this beautiful resort.
I would definitely stay here again and will not hesitate to recommend to friends. Food is good as well.

Think twice about booking a beachfront room, as there is a band that plays on the beach each night until the wee hours. You might want to check the condition of the AC in rooms 2 and 4, as one was very loud and the other did not work properly during my stay. Room 3 is the best of those rooms. The shower is not enclosed but has decent hot water. There is also hot water in the sink! An excellent free breakfast is included in the rate, including brewed coffee. The restaurant also serves a perfectly cooked squid and broccoli stir-fry for only 190p.

we didn't stay at Trudi's Place but we did eat breakfast there and it was a disappointment. the price was high but the taste was not. my boyfriend and i always order the same thing at hotels/resorts/restos for breakfast -- continental for him, filipino for me. the proportions were really small compared to other resorts/hotels/restos' price. the bread was hard and cold, the sausages looked fresh out of a can, and the fruit options was unavailable... just banana, the tocino was average --almost tasteless, the garlic rice was full of onions, and the waitress did not understand my request on how i like my eggs cooked.

The hotel is not impressive from the outside, but it sits on the beach front of Alona. I was staying at another hotel and walked in to check the prices for rooms. There is a resto in the reception front area. The staff at the desk were very friendly and helpful, this may have been the deciding factor to stay there. The room I decided to take was around P1900 per night, upstairs and the backside of the hotel. They have ocean view rooms, but I think it may not be advisable to take them as the noise from the front beach may be bothersome for some. Room included a nice breakfast. The room was very clean, simple in nature, but comfortable. The Wifi doesn't reach the rooms.

I did not like that room has no shower curtain and the floor would get fully wet in the CR. I also did not like the outside hallway outside of my room of the hotel, where plywood type doors blocked at least two entrances onto the roof...this seems to me to be a security issue and was a turn off. I almost didnt stay there due to it. Room was on the smallish side, but adequate.

I would however stay there again as overall it was a nice friendly place. The staff is a major part in their success as the rooms are competitive to other places. The food in the resto was very good and prices were better than most. What puzzled me is that they have no beach loungers for a beach front hotel.

Thank you Trudis for being nice to me..

If youre on a budget vacation and youre planning to stay there for a couple of nights just to see the beach, its Trudis. No wifi access though. I even brought along my broadband stick. Been to Panglao for more than 4x already, stayed in different resorts and everytime i go there id tell myself, "why not stay at trudis since we eat there most of the time". So i did.
