In the late afternoon on a cold day in mid-May, with dramatic skies overhead, this was an impressive place to stop for a very quick glimpse of Ainsa and a bite to eat.

The castle ruins are situated around a large square between the car park and the Plaza Major. To be honest, I found the overall look of this area to be disappointing, but this may have been because there was lots of scaffolding around and a fair bit of litter from a previous event. I think I also looked on it badly as I initially thought in error that it was the Plaza Major and it wasn’t what I was expecting!

There’s not much of the castle to explore, although there is some sort of birds of prey exhibition centre tucked away in one of the corners, and the best thing here is the opportunity to climb onto the ramparts to enjoy views of the surrounding countryside. To be honest however, this is just the ante-room for the main event, which is the stunning Plaza Major next door and the rest of the lovely old village.

Between the car park and plaza mayor sits the castle which is just a lovely space. Climbing the stairs to walk around the walls is easy and the views are great. Only thing to keep in minds is that the railings are not very ‘kid proof’ and I was aware that my toddler was at risk of tumbling between the railings and falling off the wall - very necessary to keep an extra close eye on the small ones

The castle is amazing, with 2 distinct periods of construction several centuries apart. You can walk up on the walls for breathtaking views.
