Hanata-en is of the very best, if not THE best Japanese gardens in the Tokyo area. Their teahouse, adjacent to the pond garden, hosts noh plays, kabuki, and tea ceremony on certain days of the year. Community buses do serve Hanata-en though their schedules are very limited so check at the station before venturing out as it is a LONG way from the station and there are no cafes or restaurants in the area. The expanse is large, and it is indeed a true Japanese "Strolling" Garden over hills, dales, ponds, bridges a true adventure for the aficionado of Japanese gardens. Highlighted in the book "Hidden Gardens of Japan" available via Amazon Japan, large bookstores in Tokyo and KInokuniya Books USA online. Hanata-en is a real winner.
