Shimoda Tokyu Hotel is one of the nicest hotels I've stayed in EVER.

They have a complimentary shuttle that picks you up at the train station. You are then greeted by the staff (who speak English) and a staff member escorts you to your room and explains everything to you and shows you around your room and the hotel. Truly the best customer service I've ever had!

The hotel itself is AMAZING. The rooms are HUGE (seriously - bigger than any of my NYC apartments) and clean, with gorgeous views of the ocean. The bathrooms are stocked with anything you'd need. The pool is great, and there's a pathway that leads down to a beach. There is also a hot springs spa that I really enjoyed.

Everyone keeps raving about the breakfast and there's as reason for that - IT'S SO GOOD. A huge selection with a mix of Western dishes (meats, waffles, eggs) and Japanese dishes (sashimi for breakfast!! Loved it!). Also fresh-squeezed juice, desserts, and even wine! It was so decadent and special.

Shimoda itself is an absolutely adorable and stunning town. We spent one day just walking all over town. Please do yourself a favor and have dinner at Gorosaya. We also had a really great redfish burger for lunch down by the seafood market at a burger restaurant.

Back to the outstanding customer service - at checkout day, they were really busy and the shuttle bus was filled with people going back to the train station. There was not room for us, so they brought out another bus for us so we would not miss our train. I offered to call myself a taxi, but they insisted on helping us. Wonderful, wonderful staff!

Among the dozens of onsen hotels and ryokans where we have stayed, the Shimoda Tokyu Hotel is in the first rank.

As all of the “Management” photos show, the location of the hotel is spectacular; the photos do not exaggerate the natural beauty. The town of Shimoda itself is compact, has many different places of both scenic and historic interest (emphasizing the first six months of 1854, but also much more), and unexpected niches and corners. The natives are very proud of their town, and their local specialty foods (wasabi, and an indigenous red fish).

The staff of the Shimoda Tokyu Hotel is professional, courteous, efficient, helpful, and pleasant.

The guest rooms are large by Japanese standards, and are well-maintained and clean, with all of the usual amenities.

The (gender-segregated) public baths are spacious, and include rotemburo (outdoor baths) with slat roofs that stop *most* of the rain (a vigorous rain squall passed through while we were soaking there), but allow just enough drops to filter through to keep the bather in touch with the natural environment. There is a view of the ocean from the rotemburo, but one must peer through foliage to see it. (The views from the guest rooms is better.)

The buffet breakfast, with variegated Japanese and Western hot and cold dishes, fresh-squeezed juices, and Italian wines, is spectacular, superior to most or all other Japanese hotel buffets.

One quibble: the window in the guest room in which we stayed could be opened for a breath of the fresh ocean air, but its maximum opening was less than 10cm/4 inches; located at the extreme left of the window, at the wall of the room, the gap did not allow even the end of the lens of a very compact camera to be extended through it. Presumably, the restriction is there to discourage suicides, but the allowed opening is ludicrously narrow. To add to the frustration, a portable fan/air conditionser was located on the floor right where one must place one's feet to open that tiny gap in the window. (We moved the fan to the closet for the duration of our stay.)

The lobby has a heavy coffee table book in the waiting area of black-and-white photographs of oceans around the world; no shorelines, just the surface of oceans; it is one of the weirdest photo books this reviewer ever has encountered; do not miss it.

The too-narrow restriction on the window opening aside, the Shimoda Tokyu Hotel is nearly perfect. We are firmly resolved to stay there again in the future.

Room tip: Of course, the ocean view is desirable.

The room itself is average at best, beds could use some extra love. Our view was not great but it was still very pleasant. Get the ocean view. The view from the lobby is fantastic. The breakfast can’t be beat. Overall I would stay again but only when paying the discounted rate.

Very nice hotel, the location is both its plus and its minus, Seated on a hill next to the seaside, the view is to die for. As a result, it is also quite outside of town and there are no free shuttle bus from city post 6pm, so if you don't reserve dinner, you will need to take a taxi from shimoda downtown.

The rest however are amazing, good rooms, fast internet, good onsen, wonderful breakfast buffet. Service is excellent too, so if you feel like a day or two out of city, come here and enjoy yourself !

It is the place to go for a relaxing, quiet and peaceful atmosphere.Hotel is on top of a hill with great views of the ocean.Room is very clean and large for a Japanese hotel.Bathroom spacious and complete with all amenities. If you have traveled all the way to this hotel stay a couple of days and you would not regret it.Lots of outdoor activities like hikes, trails and visits to surrounding areas especially during the plum and cherry blossoms seasons.
Free and fast WiFi.
I must mention that the buffet breakfast ( wide choices) is one of the best I had in Japan especially when breakfast was mainly traditional dishes.I enjoyed the breakfast very much.
Staff are efficient, polite and very helpful. Some staff could speak English and communication was not a problem.
Hotel has a shuttle bus to pick up guests from the Shimoda train station every 30 mins.
Travel there with a Rail Pass would save you a substantial amount of money.
