“Pretty amazing salt flat”
Review of Salar de Surire

Salar de Surire
Reviewed 14 December 2016

It takes you a while to get here from Putre (about 3 hours of 4WD drive) but it gets you a place well off of the tourist trail and to places that few people have ever seen. The salt flat has flamingos, llamas and alpacas. Also there is an amazing volcanic natural hot spring that is well worth bringing some bathers to go swimming. All in all, its a remote salt flat that rewards visitors with beautiful views and untouched landscapes.

Not many people visit this place, but go there while it is still off the beaten track. A great tour by car around this salt flat and we saw flamengo's, birds, salt being blown in the air by the wind, etc. There's even a hot spring on the edge of the salt flat where you can bath for free. A tour is recommended, or you need to have a 4WD car and a really good map with some offroad experience. Take (one) the wrong exit(s) and you'll end up in Bolivia without seeing any borders. Careful with the loose sand, which might get you stuck if you're not an experienced driver. However, go there because it's really beautiful!

The salt floats are vast and stunning. It is worth the cost, time and altitude sickness to see this glorious place - worth making sure your guide/driver carries oxygen......

I've been travelling around the parks, mountains and nature for years. The only thing that I could say is that Surire is one of the most remarkable experiences of my life. NOBODY goes to this place and you will be surrounded by wild animals in their habitat. The park is huge, I've been driving a 4x4 the whole day and it is a lot to see. I love salar de uyuni and altiplano in Bolivia but this place is far beautiful.
