“WestJet fail”
Review of WestJet

Reviewed January 7, 2025

They bumped me off a direct flight and completely failed to get me home in timely fashion. Put me on milk run and no accountability.

I am very unsatisfied with the stringent refund policies and how your tickets look with how many bags are included versus what REALLY is included. I bought tickets for My Adult kids and grandkids and they saw on their ticket stub that there was 0 bags included - yey after purchasing the ultrabasic - on the same transaction added The seat selection with extra room and included a Carry on - I also paid for a Check Bag on Nov 19 -
My kids saw their tickets that said 0 bags and on their own added 2 checked bags that added $230 for return flights - they did not needed these bags as I already did the upgrade and they cannot afford to throw money away. After 1 hour 17 mins chatting with an agent we could not get a refund on the extra bags they do not need!!! The agent mented to maybe try and call again after the flights and they MAY offer a credit - So now I get to waste more time a for both myself - and your agents - so in the end costing WestJet more money by paying employees than just doing the RIGHT thing.

Flight was delayed for hours continuously. No straight answers. Finally cancelled. Given a food voucher that was equal to 17$USD meanwhile a sandwich was 16$USD & M&Ms were $9USD. 3 bottles of water were $28. We bought a bag of chips & other snacks for over $30. The audacity to give you $17USD when they are well aware of airport prices. Communication was horrible. So many ppl running around trying to figure out what to do or what next step was. Lots of anxiety amongst ppl. They finally directed to retrieve our luggage. That took over an hour and not 1 west jet representative was there for questions. The mood & anxiety amongst passengers was unbelievable. Once again no explanation just follow the line of ppl to the buses. No mention of where we were going or to which hotel. Most disorganized operation I’ve ever experienced. With hours of being stranded so many shared their nightmare stories of delays & cancellation of flights in the past and said never again. They admitted they were foolish to trust again. We flew to Cancun on Air Canada & I wish we had done the same returning home. At our resort my husband and I had our own room with 2 beds as that’s how we sleep. Our 24 year old had her own reservation at the resort and her own room. We told the receptionist at the hotel that west jet put us in and they said, “you’re same family, one room”. We never ever travel that way as we cannot sleep well. We lost a night of restful sleep and they don’t even care. Lack of organization. Lack of customer service. My husband was on phone with west jet when they cancelled and they moved us next day 6:40pm flight saying it was the earliest. They LIED. Met ppl on the bus & they said they managed a 1 or 1:30pm flight. Good riddance west jet. Bottom of the barrel company. We need to arrange our own transport back to airport today. It’s over half an hour away. Keep receipts. Apparently they will reimburse. The only positive, it’s a nice hotel but when you can’t sleep you really don’t feel well nor care. I’d much rather be on another flight with another airline. The inconvenience this has caused is pathetic & created a domino effect. I only booked west jet coming home so we could spend a little more time at resort on our last day. West jet ruined that by making our last day so stressful. We were hungry & tired. Strung along without answers. Then sleep deprived at the hotel because they decided to give us one room only in a massive hotel. Apparently they don’t know how to accommodate either. Only make things worse. Did I mention we all had commitments today. Sick of writing so not going there

We flew three times with WestJet while in Canada and something went wrong with every single flight.

We are from Australia and I would say that it's fairly well aligned with our budget air offering here - Jetstar. They do have pretty cheap fares and a fairly wide offering as far as flight destinations go but they aren't the most reliable and I DEFINITELY wouldn't book with them if I was depending on a time sensitive service.

Our first flight from Vancouver to Calgary was the least eventful. Nothing major but flight was delayed about an hour due to some kind of mystery medical emergency.

Second flight was an unmitigated disaster. We arrived early for our flight from Calgary to Kelowna. Unfortunately it was cancelled due to "unexpected maintenance" AFTER we had passed security. By the time we made it back through security the people who had arrived after us seemed to have taken most of the rebooking slots on the next available flights.

They eventually booked us on another flight the next day. We had tickets for an event the next day and were looking to lose a few thousand dollars if we missed it so we were pretty upset and, after desperately calling customer service (who were great) they managed to get us the final seats on the last flight out for the night. We still had around an 11 hour wait at the airport with two kids which wasn't ideal. I noted that there were a lot of unhappy people milling around the airport as our flight wasn't the only one cancelled.

Upon arrival in Kelowna we couldn't actually disembark as there was a further issue with the ramp so were also kept on the plane for around an hour.

Third flight was from Kelowna to Vancouver. This one the delay was on the runway. itself. We were all boarded and then ended up sitting there for an hour as they were unable to take off due to a "passenger allocation" issue.

Staff overall were lovely and pricing was fair. Due to the lack of reliability I'd be hesitant to recommend though. They definitely seem to have more than their fair share of issues.

We had the absolute worst experience with WestJet. I would not recommend this airline to anyone. After lining up to board our flight to Toronto, we were informed of “mechanical issues” with the plane. We were then told that the plane would be delayed by an hour… and then another hour… and so on and so forth until we were finally informed of our flight cancellation some ~3 hours later. Staff lacked knowledge about the status of the plane and what was happening in general. We were told to wait yet another hour, then sent to immigration and baggage claim to re-enter Mexico and be transported to a hotel. We were forced to wait for luggage and transportation until nearly midnight, which was 6 hours after our originally scheduled departure. Upon boarding transportation to the hotel, we were not even informed about WHERE we were staying for the night. In fact, we did not find out the name of our hotel until we arrived and saw the sign out front. Furthermore, although we were originally booked as business class passengers, we were downgraded on our rescheduled flight to economy with no explanation. Listen, I understand that mechanical issues happen and are out of the airline's control. I also understand that staff can only do so much and can only share the information that they are given. I even understand having to downgrade passengers for rescheduled flights. However, what I do not understand is how such a large and well-established airline can so utterly and completely fail to communicate with their customers, have proper measures in place for situations like these, and leave customers for over 7 hours with no information. Disappointing in every way possible.
