“Good flight”
Review of South African Airways

Reviewed 4 April 2018

The flight is what I would expect from SAA. I chose a seat next to Business Class and therefore had ample leg room. My meal was served first because of my Voyager member preferences. Low cholesterol and fat meals are limited (chicken or fish), but other than this it was satisfying.

The flight took off and landed on time . The food was no worse than the usual economy class fare on other airlines. The worst aspect of the flight was that the legroom in the rear economy cabin was very poor. I am 5 feet 9 inches tall, so average height, but my knees were pressed against the seat in front. For an eleven hour flight this is unacceptable.

On the return journey I was in the forward economy cabin which was much more comfortable.

Q. What international airline carrier and major national airplane carrier won’t accept credit cards (Australian) as payment direct on website or over the telephone to a sales team
member?
A. South African Airlines - horrendous

While travelling Africa I decided to fly Capetown to Livingston, Zambia and the Livingston to Johannesburg, on South African Airlines.
Booked the flight online, received the email confirmation stating tickets had been reserved but no payment was made. Then tried with 3 other credit cards and all three credit cards from different Australian major banks where rejected.

I then emailed South African Airlines (SAA) reservations to enquirer about tickets and to confirm tickets were still required. 2 weeks later, 3 emails later and still no response from SAA.

Finally my call (4th) to SAA was received, took 1hr21min to explain ticket situation and told tickets where to be renewed (at a greater expense than first reservation) got to the payment/transaction process of this telephone conversation and the sales staff said “your credit card can’t be accepted, we don’t accept international credit cards over the telephone ”. (Could of said/asked/told this at start of sales conversation).

Get to the airport the day we are to fly to Livingstone and the ticket prices jumped to $869usd from the original purchase reservation price of $356usd. Grrrr SAA

Come to check in and I hold Gold Status for Star Alliance, allowing 32kg for baggage allowance. The staff at Capetown and Livingstone tried to charge me 8kg over weight limit when my checked bag was 31kg and Gold Status allows 32kg on international flights. It took a trip out of security checking area to the customer sales team to clear this matter (I wasn’t charged extra $$$), but it took time and was a hassle for all involved.

Now it is time to fly and SAA won’t allow any mb devices to be used as inflight entertainment on flights. WTF. The mb phones are on flight mode, they don’t interfere with electronics of flights and SAA didn’t provide any inflight entertainment in the first place. !!

The business class hostess was the grumpiest, rudest and meanest air hostess I have ever come across (I’ve travelled 73 countries). She had Bulldog aggression, so much to say everything for her was a hassle - no customer service at all.

Feedback to SAA - online credit card bookings to accept international credit cards as you are a international airline carrier.

We had just a short flight (under two hours) so I was surprised when they offered a hot meal. It wasn't very tasty but unlike US airlines at least they made the effort. Staff were friendly with one guy being downright jovial. The flight left on time and arrived early. Seats were OK for such a short flight. Note that you may have to take a bus to the plane so be prepared for inclement weather. It was pouring rain when we were trying to board. Luckily the stairs were covered, but we got pretty wet going from the bus to the plane. Seat comfort was normal.
