Day trip from Kanazawa to Shirakawago

Dear All

We, a group of 4 people, plan to stay in Kanazawa for two nights in mid May 2017 and plan to do a day trip from Kanazawa to see the world heritage village in Shirakawago. Can you please advise if we should take a day tour? or could we go there by using public transport? Please help. Thanks a lot.

Kind regards

Claire

You don't need a travel agent. Just book the bus in advance online if buying tickets, or if using a pass, call. Reservation is open 30 days before your travel date. The link below contains all information:

Shirakawago itself is a small village. People often will go inside one of the gasshou houses open to visitors, take the shuttle up to the viewing point to see the village from up high, and then just roam. Allow 2-3 hours of ground time.

With 4 of you it would be much better and much more flexible to hire a car for 12hours from Kanazawa. You could then also visit the other charming little Gassho-zuri villages away from the 'rivers' of tourists flooding through Shirakawago.

Bus trip Kanazawa x4pax return: ~13,000Yen

Car rental 12hours from Kanazawa: ~5000Yen

Bus = zero flexibility

Car = plan when/where/stop whenever you want :)

@GenkiSudo: the OP asked the first question in Feb 2017.

For poster in #12, they actually have a rather large party of 5 adults and 3 kids. Only a van like Toyota Highace can take a party that size. The rental cost with insurance for one day is going to be 11,000 to 12,000 Yen. Toll fees cost 3,800 Yen one way (75 minutes). Using free roads means close to a 2-hour drive. Fuel cost is roughly 2,000 Yen. For a party that size, driving could still end up being cheaper than the bus, but not by that much.

Only the particular buses denoted by the red diamond won't be running. In other words, that means one of the late evening buses in either direction.
