Advice please for Santa trip to Lapland 2015!

I have spent literally days searching for the perfect lapland trip for 2015 flying from Manchester and I am feeling overwhelmed. I have 2 girls who will be aged 4 and 7 and will be going with my sister in law who also has 2 girls similar age. I like the idea of log cabins but don't fancy spending precious time cooking and shopping so maybe this isn't practical. I also don't want a touristy commercialised location so thinking Saariselka is the place to go. The other issue is timing. We can only do school holidays and are considering going on 27th Dec for 3 nights, which is so much cheaper than 20th Dec which is the other option (the availability for this date is also limited). Has anyone been over this period? Is the experience still as magical? Thompsons seem to be the only company offering the dates we need but I'm stuck on choice of accommodation. We looked at the Snowy Wilderness lodges in Pallas and like the sound of all inclusive but the Santa Experience doesn't sound as good as the Saaraselka trip? Any advice would be much appreciated!

I would go for four days for the little extra. We went after xmas and they still keep the xmas spirit going.

We stayed in the cabins but our boy is 11 so I get your view on food and the like. You would have to keep paying for a taxi for the short journey at about 12-15 euros each way in a cabin.

Levi is beautiful and the kids will love it honest. I find it hard to fault much. Thompson have a full program for the children and have it worked out like clockwork.

We were there with our 5 year old grandaughter up to 28th dec - still as magical. We went with Inghams and stayed at the Gielas (Tunturi)

Some people we met stayed at lodges just 10 minutes away (Parimo) much cheaper and got the full Northern Lights show as the hotel area is very lit. We saw a little.

Check as you can stay at some lodges on half board basis with a hotel too. - Saariselka is amazing!

We will definitely go again.

Have also just today looked at doing it ourselves next time. Figured it will work out less than half price

Apartments4you have some apartments there and you can use Tesco vouchers for part payment

Just my pennies worth

Good luck

Hi. We went for Chritsmas 2014 December 24th to 29th. We travelled from Manchester with Thomsons. Can't recommend it enough. Everything was amazing. We stayed in the Tunturi Gielas. The rooms are modern and the sauna in the bathroom is a definite bonus. Being there over Christmas, we got a bonus gala meal on Christmas Eve, as this is when the Finnish celebrate Christmas, plus the gala meal on Christmas Day evening. Christmas Day was spent at Santa's resort. We saw Father Christmas on Christmas Day which our 5 year old thought was amazing.

The hotel was in a great location and the walk to the other part of the hotel for evening meal was only a few minutes.

Thomsons provide snow suits, boots and mittens. These with layers you will take kept us warm in -30 degrees. The whole holiday was amazing and nothing could ever better this Christmas.

Forgot to say we went as a family of 3, plus one set of Grandparents. When we booked, we asked for adjoining rooms, which we got. Great for when travelling together.

We went last year but earlier 10th to 14th dec.We flew with Thomsons Manchester to Ivalo and stayed at Riekonlinna hotel half board. So much for breakfeast we only need a snack at lunch time.

The hotel was perfect, food and the Thomsons reps are located their and provide entertainment which was really good.

The santa trip was also very good and the sledge hill just round the corner and everything within walking distance.

For more info read my report.Thomsons were brilliant, you do get tired with the lack of daylight and go for as long as you can.Rosie

We are currently checking prices with Thinson's. For 2ad and 2ch it's coming up at £3800 for the 3night weekend before Xmas. Is there an advantage in waiting until the Summer for better prices?

Heard Espirit are good too but they only go for 2nights and we want 3.

You can currently get 4 nights at Snowy Wilderness Lodge in Pallas for around that amount departing 16th Dec, and that's All Inclusive!.

We've booked for those dates but I've been checking prices regularly since end of January as I'm looking to change our dates to 23rd and spend Christmas there, but prices have just been steadily increasing since we first looked, some people have said they got much cheaper prices at times during the year but we'd decided we wanted this hotel and as it only has 63 rooms, we decided not to wait as it may mean missing out altogether.

We went with Esprit from 23 - 26th December 14 and went for 4 days 3 nights. It was amazing! We stayed in one of their catered cabins where you get a helper elf who comes in and serves breakfast, leaves you cake and cookies for when you get back in the afternoon from the activities you do and then cooks your evening meal. It was perfect! If you can I think 1 more day would be nice - so maybe consider 4 nights, which I think I will look for if we ever go again - it will then give you chance to just have a wander about town and go on the tobogan run in the relative day light! We did manage to tick all our boxes by doing the 3 night trip - huskys, reindeer, snow mobiles and even including the N lights but would maybe have prefered to do the reindeer run earlier in the day rather than the afternoon when it was dark :-)

Unfortunately we can only go after the schools have finished, so only have that weekend to go.
