Any advice would be greatly received and appreciated.

We booked a villa through Airbnb, paid a 50% deposit and within hours were contacted by the host to be informed their prices for 2022 had not been updated and that our accommodation would cost us an additional £2,000.00. As it was not affordable I cancelled. I found a further 2 properties which seemed reasonable, I messaged them to make sure their prices were correct because I did not want to be in the same position of paying a deposit and to have to wait several days for a refund. One confirmed no they had not been updated and the other never responded to my message. Sadly this seems to be a scam to get you to book and then ask for more money which has now been reported to Airbnb.

Anyway, I am back to square one looking for accommodation and think Kayakoy is not going to be an option because of cost. We are looking for an area which is typically Turkish and not commercial. We enjoy eating out and having a drink of an evening. We are in our late 50s so not looking to party or nightclubs.

Would Fethiye be an option? Would be very pleased to hear any suggestions and thank you in antipation.

Fethiye is a fair sized working town Michelle although it is a very nice one, but it’s not the same as Kayakoy which is as said earlier a real Turkish village.

There’s nowhere in Turkey that’s unspoilt or free of commercialism anymore. Mass tourism took over long ago and though there’s some lovely seaside resorts they are all quite touristy, some a lot more than others and probably not what your looking for really.

There are small hotels in Kayakoy would they not be suitable?

The hotels in Fethiye are mainly much bigger and not usually family run as in Kayakoy, though there are some nice ones definitely l Personally l love Fethiye but we are all different and it’s not a quiet backwater which seems to be your preference.

Another alternative may be Kas. This is a long transfer from Dalaman but has private rented villlas and hotels and is a much smaller town than Fethiye. It’s also very beautiful and one of the best resorts of all.

Hi Josephine, it was a villa we were after as we don’t really like hotels. Sadly there are not many places nowadays because tourism has taken over but certainly understand why this has had to be. What we don’t want is karaoke bars and places doing British breakfasts, we can get that at home and just want to get away from that. I will look at Kas. Any other suggestions? I have just been looking at Dalyan, which I can see is a lot bigger than Kayakoy and more touristy but does not seem too commercialised? What are your thoughts?

Thanks very much for taking the time and sharing your thoughts with me.

Dalyan is getting very commercialised and lits of karioke on Bar Street unfortunately. Have you looked at Akyaka or Orhaniye and Seliminiye on the Bozburun peninsula. Both still really unspoilt.

I haven’t stayed in Dalyan only a day visit, but as has been said and ll have also heard it’s becoming very commercialised these days.

Have you considered the Antalya area?

There’s several resorts along the Med maybe worth a look.

Side is a big favourite of mine, so much history there it’s mind blowing.. if that is of interest to you. Also Brits are in a minority here and all over the Antalya region so it has a more cosmopolitan feel than the mainly British resorts serving full English!

Then there’s Kaleici the old town/ harbour area of Antalya. This is a lovely place and not too far from AYT airport.

Cirali, unspoilt but may be a bit too quiet.

I would recommend you consider Kas though, there are more villas for rent there and it’s a beautiful area with a breathtaking coastline. Pretty little town slightly more upmarket.

Thanks Hotmail and Josephine, your knowledge is very helpful and much appreciated and will look at what you recommend. Unfortunately when we booked the accommodation we booked flights to Dalaman so may be some of the areas you mention may not be an option due to distance but will defo check. Thanks again.

Agree with Hogmail - Selimiye, Akyaka & Orhaniye are lovely unspoilt places as you're flying into Dalaman.

Cirali is definitely worth considering for the future if you fly to Antalya. We have been four times & found it to be a lovely place with enough restaurants to keep us going for a couple of weeks. Also while there, if we haven't bothered to hire a car, we have walked across the beach to Olympos, through the ruins & hopped on a dolmus to Adrasan for the day, another lovely little Turkish resort.

Have a look at properties in Uzumlu - there are a number of villas for rent there, and it is a nice little village with a fair number of restaurants (and a very good wine bar serving locally produced wine!) Like Kayakoy it is not on the coast, but not so far away from Fethiye.

Have a look at Calis Beach the Beach Resort for Fethiye lots of Villas for rent there and many are away from the prom in quiet areas. Our place is at the back of Calis and we have Farmers for neighbours. If you want bars and restaurants you can go to the prom or you can got to the street where the Sunday Market is there are plenty of traditional Turkish Restaurants.

Calis is only 4 miles from Fethiye, so, you can be there is 10 minutes by Dolmus or take the lovely water taxi over.

If you go the the Fethiye Forum look at the posts right at the top concerning Calis, there are a couple of good videos that will give you an idea. Calis does not have it’s own forum as it come under the Fethiye umbrella.

Here is the link to the Fethiye Forum, any questions, please ask.

Hello Michelle! I am first of all shocked by how the owners treated you, if you paid already in GBP, I do not understand the huge difference in price, it would be more believable if prices were quoted in TL due to the recent collapse.

There are so many villa's for rent in Kayaköy, many of them are no scam. The same can happen with villa's in Fethiye, elsewhere in Turkey or even other countries. So I see no reason to change your destination.

Kayaköy is a lovely village, with the biggest advantage that temperatures are under those of Fethiye or anywhere on the coast. Especially the evening are so lovely and just about always cool even on a hot day. Last year's 10 days with 42°C was so much more bearable in Kayaköy and you can live with a fan no aircon for us.

If you prefer a villa try "Fig garden" the owners are very nice. There are so many more but many are so newly built I have not heard anything.

Personally I am a small hotel person, on my holiday I do not want even to make my own coffee. And there are always some companions around. If you need more advise please ask I will be happy to direct you around in the village.

Good luck!

If you go on to holiday rentals on the Kayakoy page on Trip Advisor they have villas for rent.

Better than airbnb in my opinion
