I am looking for hotel recommendations and have a list of o

I am coming to NYC next month and super excited. Its been a dream of mine since I was a kid and decided to stay in Brooklyn from advice from a friend. I have a list of hotels below but the holidays inn has a very mixed set of reviews. It seems the more research and reading reviews the more confused I am getting on booking a place. As i am going in late Jan it is a low season for 4 nights a hotel is £317-£370 which is great for New York.

Insignia Hotel, Ascend Hotel Collection

La Quinta by Wyndham Brooklyn Downtown

Comfort Inn Prospect Park - Brooklyn

Wyndham Garden Brooklyn Sunset Park

Holiday Inn Brooklyn Downtown

Holiday Inn Express Brooklyn

Holiday Inn Express - Brooklyn - Bushwick (From my research this is new and opened three months ago).

Any feedback on the above or any other suggestions would be appreciated.

This is a tough one, because although I live here and am familiar with the locations of these hotels (most are in my general neighborhood), I don’t have a clue what the rooms are like or how well-managed they are.

Of the various properties you’re looking at, the Insignia is the farthest from typical tourist destinations - it’s in Sunset Park Chinatown, which is a super-interesting neighborhood, but kind of a long haul by subway from Manhattan.

My best advice would be to focus on *recent* reviews. A lot of hotels fell on hard times during the pandemic, so standards of service may not be what they used to. And many are in the process of transitioning from providing shelter to the homeless to taking in tourists.

Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

LOCATION wise, I would pick the Holiday Inn Downtown. However, I read some reviews and that would disqualify that hotel. Things can change, but I would not chance it.

As Linda said, read some recent reviews on TA, Yelp, etc.

What do you plan on doing during your trip? That will probably help determine where to stay. Brooklyn is great, but it's pretty big, so if you're planning to do some of the typical tourist things - many of which are located in Manhattan - then you'll probably want to stay somewhere closer to Manhattan. The hotels located in Downtown are probably your best bet. Sunset Park and the Comfort Inn Prospect Park, and hte one in Bushwick, are kind of far.

I agree that if you want to stay in Brooklyn, downtown Brooklyn is pretty convenient. I stayed at the aloft years ago, there also is a Sheraton and Indigo (I don't know their current status due to covid).

What do you plan on seeing and doing on your trip? Sometimes you can get a good deal on hotels in downtown/financial district in Manhattan that would be more convenient for typical tourist things compared to some of the hotels on your list.

That makes sense and I like the vibe of Brooklyn so have a few events i want to attend. I am from London so travelling upto 45 mins is not a major issue. On my holidays I like the local vibes and Brooklyn has some cool events. I will in NYC for 4 nights so I want to some tourist spots and explore other boroughs if i have time.

I see all those hotels you mentioned are still there and open.

I am pretty open minded at this stage. I do want a mix of some tourist things, local food spots, chill out and have a coffee in a local neighbourhood. Yeah as it is Jan the prices are low for NYC as it is a low season. The places in Brooklyn are fairly good deals I maybe wrong and they throw in breakfast. I need to make a plan as previous to that i am spending 2-3 days in Philalethia before i arrive in NYC. The hotel in Bushwick is just under $500 for 4 nights.

*If* the Wyndham Garden in Sunset Park has good reviews (that may be a big “if”), the location is actually pretty convenient. Even though it’s a bit deeper into Brooklyn than a downtown hotel, it’s close to an express subway stop that will get you into Manhattan quickly. Plus it’s in a neighborhood with tons of restaurants (especially, but not only,if you like real Mexican food). If you do end up staying there, I can share recommendations.

I wouldn’t place too much emphasis on a free hotel breakfasts - these are generally pretty bad at budget chains, and in my experience, even worse now. Breakfast is pretty cheap here; way tastier (and more interesting) to head for a local bakery, cafe or bodega.

Hey Linda! Thanks for the super helpful response and speedy one. You say a big IF the most recent reviews are overall somewhat postive. A big IF is there some wrong with this hotel? Oh wow real Mexican food you say. Something we are deprived off in London. I also discovered the Hotel RL Brooklyn which is somewhat postive. but he Holiday in downtown Brooklyn is a bit concerning. From looking at my list the only places that are recently postive without feeling like I am taking a risk

Insignia Hotel, Ascend Hotel Collection

Wyndham Garden Brooklyn Sunset Park 4 star -

Holiday Inn Express Brooklyn - Bushwick, - new hotel but right be the subway so noisy

Always happy for recommendations that's for sure. Ah that's true and hotel breakfasts are generic and boring.

Are you sure about Brooklyn. Most first time visitors are most interested in the Manhattan sites such as Central Park, Empire State Building, 9-11 Memorial, Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Grand Central Terminal, Tenement Museum and so on and so on.

Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with staying in Brooklyn but if most of you “must sees” are in Manhattan, it might make more sense to stay there.

To help you decide, it's probably helpful to experiment with the MTA trip planner to see transit routes & estimated travel times for places you plan to go. https://new.mta.info/

The subway system is mostly oriented around getting people to/from Manhattan. Travel between the outer boroughs can be more complicated

One reason downtown Brooklyn can be desirable is access to multiple subway lines.
