I would like to hear from those who live on Kiawah or visit often , where you go for carry out or dine in off the island? Would love great seafood suggestions, or other low country restaurant suggestions. It would also be helpful to know how long of a drive it would be to the location. We have our list of restaurants for Charleston but have never been to Kiawah before.

Thanks in advance.

All our favorite restaurants are in the Historic District/CHS/West Ashley, which we allow at least 1.25 hours to get there. We have not been out for indoor dining since pre-COVID. Make sure you have reservations for anywhere that will take them, if no reservations, you can wait 2 hours or more.

Closer to Kiawah, there are a number good restaurants on Maybank Hwy, (Fat Hen, Wild Olive, Royal Tern), which is about 10 miles from Kiawah, again, make reservations. There are lots of casual dining places, as well, on Maybank/Folly Rd (burgers/pizza/Mexican)., we plan for at least 45 minutes to get to any of these (as you get closer to Folly Beach, you may have to allow an hour or more, you will wait in line at these restaurants).

Make note that there is a severe employee shortage in the CHS restaurant community. The tourists are packing the restaurants, some of which are back to capacity, many are not.

One of the major problems (aside from lack of employees) is that many are still using UberEats and Grub Hub for take out. This totally messes up the routine in the kitchen. If you arrive for your reservation and an order for 20 for take out has just come in, you are going to wait a while to be served. Please pack your patience.

Thank you- we haven’t been out to eat since COVID-19 either. Hoping for eating outside.

What is your favorite grocery store? .

Coming from IN, you’ll be able to stop at either Harris Teeter at Bee’s Ferry, which is a brand new, very nice store (parent company is Kroger) or Publix at Savannah Hwy and Main Rd.

There is a small, very basic HT at Freshfields, just outside of Kiawah.

There is a Costco in West Ashley that we have been going to the last couple times we have been to Kiawah. A membership is required. Best to go there on your way to Kiawah as it is about 35-40 minutes away. I like their prepared meals, so I don't have to cook after a long day at the beach. There is a Target nearby at the citadel mall for smaller quantities of drinks ect.

As far as restaurants, we like kinfolk for take out of casual meals. It is just outside of Kiawah. The Cherrywood BBQ on Kiawah at the Osprey Point golf course has been hit or miss for us, but the view is lovely and always some alligators hanging out by the ponds. This was always a hit with my kids when they were younger as we don't have them in our home state. Of course we viewed them at distance!

KB, you may have heard, but Fat Hen has closed or soon will, such a great spot! Another casual spot we love down that way is Tomato Shed Cafe, but have not been in a couple of years, hope it’s still there!

Yep, Fat Hen is out of the picture by the end of the week.

Sorry to see them go.

Tomato Shed is doing just fine.

Noooooo!!! We come to Seabrook Island every other summer and Fat Hen has been a highlight for us since 2008. Enjoy your retirement Fred!
